No mention of Captain Jack? says it all really.

Well, it doesn’t say, “This is the character who gets most of the lines in every episode”, so no.

I did hear Jack appears to have transitioned from Omnisexual to Just Really Gay

There is still, IMO, Stuff Going On with him and Gwen. I may be over-sensitive to this, what with Gwen being the character equivalent of nails down a blackboard. Also, I was terrified that the most marketable thing to do with a pansexual man in the US would be to straighten him, so I was hugely relieved by the presence of Hot Gay Sex.

ETA: There is of course no possible way I could have watched the first eight episodes of this. None whatsoever, not since Skynet.

  • Lilith __,

Wow, you watch Torchwood and don't like Gwen, Emma?! That must be very tortuous!

And Sacha, you sound like you don't like ham and cheese?

There are Compensations. And slightly less frivolously, bisexual role models for my children? Pretty thin on the ground.

One thing I always liked about S1 and 2 is how everybody gets partners of various genders (and in some cases, species), and the only concern to the plot is whether they are evil or not.

  • Max Rose, in reply to Emma Hart,

And when you're in a relationship, and you have no concept of anything other than two-person relationships, and you find you have strong feelings for a third? That you can love another person and not fall out of love with your partner? The first reflex is to lie.

I know that feeling very much. Actually, the first reflex is to lie to yourself: you can't be feeling this, it's just a little crush, it'll never happen anyway. Then you start to think that there must be something wrong with your partner, or that there's something wrong with you. Maybe you then consider that if you're attracted to someone else, it must be because you're no longer attracted to your partner, and maybe you* start diverting your sexual energies through porn, impersonal fantasies or paid sex ... and thanks to DGM and any number of sex therapists we know that this is sinful and/or addictive behaviour. And all because we're taught that love is a zero-sum game.

Except we're not. Most people think that what you feel for a very close friend is also love, yet most people accept that it's possible to have more than one friend. And it's comsidered a terrible thing for parents to tell their children that one of them is their favourite: you're supposed to love them all equally. Why is it only erotic love that we demand to be exclusive?

[*where "you" = "me" in this case. YMMV, but it's far from unusual]

  • Craig Young,

Oops- my earlier post should read Marcella Althaus-Reid. Here's a juicy link...

    http://www.althaus-reid.com/index1.html

And a quote from the blurb on her wonderful book, Indecent Theology (!):

"All theology is sexual theology... What can sexual stories from fetishism and sadomasochism tell us about our relationship with God, Jesus and Mary? Isn't it time that heterosexuals came out of their closets too? By examining the dialectics of decency and indecency and exploring a theology of sexual stories from the margins, this book brings together for the first time Liberation theology, Queer Theory, post-Marxism and Postcolonial analysis in an explosive mixture. Indecent Theology is an out-of-the-closet style of doing theology and shows how we can reflect on the Virgin Mary and on Christology from sexual stories taken from fetishism, leather lifestyles and transvestism. "

For the tag line for the first episode to mention unknown characters and not the established ones smacks of ignorance of the preceding series and an overwhelming shift to a US centric cast order, why bother to even mention Torchwood?.

with Gwen being the character equivalent of nails down a blackboard.

    Well, she is Welsh.

And I <3 Jayne! Man, I miss that programme.

This might be a good point to mention that there's a geek convention here in Chch in a couple of weeks time which includes in the programme a Firefly marathon.

Vaguely back on topic, Annie Sprinkle (OMG, Annie Sprinkle, etc) is looking for people in relationships to do this survey on relationship and sexual satisfaction. From the places I've seen it turning up, they may have problems getting enough men, so, y'know, it's For Science and all.
