I have a drawer full of old t-shirts, none of which still fit - but I can't throw them away - I wonder what a 25 year old HART shirt is worth ....
-
I'm off to plug my kettle into it to see what happens
Be sure to let us know if skynet becomes sentient.

I just got rid of a bunch, including my 'large breasts aren't everything' t-shirt. With the harshest cull I could manage, Karl and I still have four drawers of t-shirts between us.

I've got some original Mambo first prints and a brilliant Hacksaw Jim Duggan shirt from the 80s that is almost see-through it's so well worn. (Once I was wearing it on High St in Auckland and a passing businessman in his 40s yelled out "Hoooooo!" from across the street. I love that shirt.)
-
I have an original orangey-yellow 1980s 'Women Can Do Anything' shirt (remember that campaign?). Unfortunately, 'anything' does not appear to include 'fit into this tshirt after you hit 30'. At least, not in my case.
Being namechecked in Emma's blog posts is, like, neato. :)
(I am probably buying yet another pair of shoes in the next few weeks, incidentally. For a wedding.)

Danielle, do you reckon there is a market niche for rental shoes?
I ask because my darling other half has (cough) several pairs of shoes that could form a nice little revenue-stream if they were hired out.
I can understand that some people might go "Eeew" at the prospect of rental shoes.

Good Luck Emma (bitch slut from hell)
Ok ,as someone who got pissed off one day because, we got notice, and yet again I would be looking for somewhere that didn't mind the dog, I decided we were buying, and t'other half said a) we cant afford it b) don't have any deposit, to which I replied "Ah but we have a computer, just watch me". 6 hours later I saw it . Did a drive by and on seeing a couple of palms out the back ( of which I collect) decided to get it. That was a great day! We got it and the trick I discovered was everything into boxes, write what's in them take it over to the new place ,__then__ you get to decide what you want to unpack (kettle etc)or, leave in boxes for another day .We still have stuff in the basement boxed and happily I pass stuff on because after 5 years I know we don't need any of it. Purge I say ! It's fun -

Unable to throw out: my large white t-shirt with over-sized black lettering that says 'GO-GO'.
No fluoro fingerless gloves, but.
-
I disagree - unpack those boxes, do more triage - otherwise you end up with a boxes in the hallway for 2 years like we did (just because we can't find somewhere for all my tools doesn't mean I want to throw them away)
Rental shoes? think bowling alley - buy some spray stuff, insist that special shoes must be worn on dance floor, profit!
-
I disagree
Guess it helps if you have a basement, plus ours has space for workshop so some tools are there although he constantly complains it's not meant to house boxes:) but it saves alot of stress to just move and not be torn between the brain space fillers of GO GO t shirts and the family silver.Otherwise you got one big leave and another big arrive. And no planning of what will fit, what goes where before you even get there.

Wait until the movers lose your furniture, the sixteen piece dinner set becomes four hundred pieces...
Never use professional movers unless you're heavily insured - they do not care about your shit, especially if your abode has bad access and your house is full of belongings the size of a baby grand! If you've heard stories of movers going through your underwear, emptying out your pantry and cooking a feed, its all true - confirmed by ex-professional-mover-sisters-boyfriends-cousin.
-
Supervise them. We always just hang around the house while the movers do their thing.
</Bitter experience from about five moves ago>
-
What I don't recommend is moving house at 36 weeks pregnant
Did that once, only good part was i didn't have to lift anything heavy. Downside, the (now) ex-partners 6 mates that turned up to help were only interested in the free beer afterwards. It was all over rover after they put it all will-nilly in the house.

We might have considered it, if it hadn't been for friends of ours who did it when they moved a couple of months ago. The movers were six hours late turning up and the whole experience way too stressful.
We have a rented truck, a long weekend, and a bunch of friends of varying degrees of burliness.
-
treat those friends really well - IMHO you're not allowed to ask someone to help you move more than once a decade, roll out the good pizza, and the good beer at the end

Movers can be good, but for some reason the more expensive they are the worse they are. The best movers we ever had were two guys from a cheap firm who moved our whole house lot in two hours. The worst were from a well-known company and they broke all of the glassware I got for my 21st (I discovered after unpacking a month later)

Or once a lifetime, if they've helped you carry up a narrow flight of stairs one of those old washing machines that came with a concrete ballast inside. By rights I should have named my first born after the guy.
roll out the good pizza
Recipe available upon request. Just slip five dollars under my door.

I suspect they knew you hadn't purchased insurance from this reputable moving company! Apparently its top of the list of things they look at on the moving order, an indication of how cavalier they can/cannot be with the job.

That was the worst part, I had! But because I was living alone it took me a long time to unpack everything.

"Remember when we thought ten gig was unimaginably huge?"
Hah. I remember when we got a Mac LC575 with 500MB of memory, and I thought it was ace, because there was just enough room to install Civilisation II, at a massive 50MB. Better yet, the screen had colour.
The lease on our flat expires in early January, and both groups leaving are currently fretting because we didn't realise that normal flats (as opposed to student ones) cannot be viewed and signed up for six months in advance, as we had been accustomed to. Damn near everything on TradeMe is available now, which means we're gonna have to start looking, oooh, about mid-December. And then we get to try moving out over New Year's. It's going to be interesting.

I have five weddings to go to next year. I am already stocking up on shoes.

I feel your pain! Note to self: invite friends to 'Unpacking Party' under the guise of 'House Warming'

oh we're going to play THAT game .... before we get to the cardboard box in the road: I worked for a NZ Uni in the late 70s, back when people referred to "the computer" because there was just one - we bought 1.5Mb of ram (actual core, hand threaded by someone in the 3rd world) for NZ$1M (about US$1.5M at the time) ....

What?! You mean Yorkshire?...

We have a wedding to go to at Alberton. They say no stilettos. Not a problem.

Any time anyone has moved in the last decade or so, we've offered to help. Paybacks are quite nice, akshully.
