Can't we go back to shaking our heads at Michael Laws?

Shaking our heads won't achieve anything. Cutting his balls off, on the other hand...

  • philipmatthews,

Worst thing about Christchurch? The orgy of fear-and-loathing self-congratulatory smugness that the mere mention of the place provokes. So Keir saw a swastika tatt when visiting a city of 375,000-odd souls and had to have a wee lie down afterwards? The poor dear.

Thanks for saying this. Saw more skinheads with swastikas when I lived in Aro Valley in the 80s than here. Overheard more casual racism when I lived on the North Shore. No one's ever asked me what school I went to or which of the ships I came out on. The rich here are as likely to be new-money as old -- the Carters, the Stewarts. But in terms of exposing bullshit prejudice about Chch, this story is my favourite. It's Shortland Street actor Will Hall talking to Press TV writer Trevor Agnew:

When I first started on Shortland Street, they had a scene where Chris Warner goes looking for his son and tracked him down in Christchurch. They weren't going to fly to Christchurch to shoot a scene, so they found a leafy park out in West Auckland. To make it look like Christchurch, they opened on two skinheads.

    Okay, it's a pike.

    Christ, that's priceless.

  • Joe Wylie,

    . . . worship a giant owl . . .

Like, Bohemian Grove style? Now that you mention it, there are an awful lot of stately redwoods around.

. . . nowhere else in New Zealand have I encountered the sheer casual racism and homophobia of Christchurch.

In the six years I've lived here I've never once heard any of those nasty sneers about Helen Clark's marriage. Unfortunately not so in Auckland and Wellington, and from people that I'd have expected to know better. When you know the lie of the land, you know who to avoid engaging with.

  • st ephen,

ChCh PAS readers all live within a suburb or two of the Uni
    No they don't.

Right. Good to have that settled. Personally, if I had to live back in ChCh and Islander wouldn’t give me asylum on the Coast, I’d choose a nice multi-cultural ghetto near the uni. After all, if you had to live in Texas or Georgia, who wouldn’t pick Austin or Athens? ;-)

people from ChCh think they live in a city
And now you know what I think based on where I live...

Of course I know what you’re thinking. You’re thinking: I bet he went to St. Thomas’.

They persist with the whole “first four ships” and “what school did you go to?” crap.
...not what I say, which you don't appear to be able to hear. So there's not a lot of point in me continuing to talk.

Well I did read the bit where you deduced an awful lot about someone’s life from their hairstyle. But hey, it’s Friday. Peace and love to all the good people of Christchurch. I have many times admired your Hagley Park and your Botanic Garden. Your convenient access to the Southern Alps and West Coast, and …. um….those rubber mats at Bottle Lake Forest that make it easy to ride up sand dunes?

  • Jogging Solo,

Speaking of Christs Col, the "Auckland Grammar Nazis" reminded me of far too many yobbos I encountered at that place. An inverse proportional relationship between the size of their wallets and their intellectualism.

That balls. There's plenty of artists and intellectuals from a CC background - including the guy who recently sculpted Nick Smith out of shit. :)

Please to quote, st ephen? I don't recall saying anything about hair, either in the article or on the thread, but I can't be arsed going back to check, and it could just be the premature senility.

  • Just thinking,

Appologies - the pier is very flat and useable (for anypurpose). Any other pedestrian area has cobble stones. The thought is about sustainability (replace one stone at a time), Permiable surface for water to seep through & for it to look nice and exclude skate boards & therefore zimmerframes too.
Much like the Classical Musak being pumped out to make sure no-one goes into the inner city businesses, or that's its effect.

I'm guilty of living (sometimes far too) close to Uni.

Musak? They were playing Prokofiev's Romeo & Juliet at Casual Mall yesterday.

Live music I would applauded such a move, but the purpose of the canned classics is to move people on & it works.

  • Danielle,

Bugger the skinhead/snob debate, here's my problem with Christchurch: my tiny brain finds it impossible to navigate a flat place. I need several carefully arranged dormant volcanoes, two harbours and a western range of hills to work out where the fuck I am.

  • Stephen Judd,

I don't see why Christchurch can't both have an undeservedly prominent set of violent white eejits AND be as progressive, cultured and delightful as the rest of NZ. It's not as though everywhere else is homogenously wonderful.

Danielle - the signs are there.
Small hills close to you are at the South & big hills in the distance (with snow) to your north west.

Sunny Day and the strong cold breeze comes from the east.
Sunny Day & hot dry wind comes from the north west
Grey day bitterly cold wind cuts through you from the south.

Be back in a minute: Just popping down to New Brighton with a boom box and the complete recordings of Webern.

Anyone know where Kyle Chapman and his gang live? Give me the exact coordinates and I'll approach from the West in an attempt to drive them into the sea.

My experience differs. Enormously. Have you ever been in a rural service town?

Then you are not hanging out with my family. Which I think you should be thankful for.

I need several carefully arranged dormant volcanoes, two harbours and a western range of hills to work out where the fuck I am.

I'm completely the opposite. I can navigate my way around Chch, almost to the street, based on where the Port Hills are. The hills in Wellington throw me, and I can never make the Harbour make sense.

If you leave some Rammstein playing on the end of the pier the vigilant aryans might lemming themselves into the surf.

  • Simon Grigg,

I hope they eat them all before my next visit.

They've mostly gone, culled after the latest rabies scare, in a rather brutal fashion. I saw huge piles of the poor things in our road (off the tourist track of course) and a truck with at least 50 dead dogs in front of a tourist bus full of clearly distraught Japanese on Jl. Bypass Ngurah Rai.

Righto, back to the geographical bickering...

For those of you who enjoy laughing at Neo-Nazis I highly recommend stormfront.org.

After reading about Kyle and his gang yesterday, I wanted to know what sort of culture they would like to promote -- and came across some surprising posts.

e.g, apparently it is okay to listen to Joanna Newsom! Because she plays a harp, an instrument deemed to have an illustrious European heritage.

In terms of literature, skinheads and nerds seem to be on the same page, with Lord of the Rings, C.S Lewis and Dune all rating highly. I also recommend the Stormfront book of white power poetry for a good chuckle. In between the expected racist rhymes there are some almost endearingly tender-hearted and inept poems about spurned love.
