The thing I really don’t understand – even were her claims true, which they’re not – is that we don’t keep kids safe by giving them less information.
I know that mixing toilet cleaner and bleach is a really bad idea, because I went to science class in high school. Since when is the answer ever less information?
I still can’t get over the column in which she says all girls want an Edward. Whatevs.
-
Face it Emma, your kids are safe.
As their loving mother you are their primary source of the values they will grow up with and you are lightyears ahead of Dr Miriam (whoever the fuck she is!) in that regard.
As far as I am concerned 'Family First' should be renamed 'Family Fascists'.
Cunch of bunts. -
And yeah, that bit about getting a 'Mrs' and a 'Mo.M' is just so utterly facile it leaves me spluttering.
-
To me, ‘no sex before marriage’ always sounds like telling kids they’re not allowed to learn to ride a bike because they’ll fall off and get hurt, but on their 21st birthday they’re going to ride the Tour de France.
Plus, not everyone wants to (or could) ride the Tour de France at all.
-
how you find out what the fuck you’re doing
I see what you did there :).
-
If they wanted to marry someone they hadn’t had sex with, that might be enough to make me lock them in their room and not let them out until they’d come to their senses.
Presumably you'd have to lock someone(s) else in the room with them.

complete their PhDs at 35, and realise the hardest challenge lies ahead
grrrr Thank you for pointing out that the degree which is actually a frigging nightmare to complete is less important than the biological act that pretty much everyone can do (admittedly to varying levels of competence).
Note also the patronizing note of "yes dear your degree recognizing your intellectual contribution to society is all very well ... now be a good woman and get on with being pregnant"
So angry now ... words difficult ....
-
I suspect ur preaching to the converted here, as much as Miriam is "pissing in the wind"
I raised all my house monsters ( all 5 have degree's) that sexing is as important as food drink, sleep, & variety as important as a variable diet.
But if u don't love ur self, love is hard to reach !
It MY firm conviction, that 2 generations, religon free, would pretty much remove sex crime, yea ok, with high speed broadband !
Sexing & loving are 2 different things, & not mutually exclusive !
Loving sexing, is alright with most post 60's folk, I like to think ! -

The column in question. Good for lulz.
She did an okay job, in her Close Up and RNZ interviews, of pretending to be just reasonable and concerned, but it took almost no digging at all to uncover some pretty amazing sexism. And remember, ladies, motherhood is inevitable.

The health benefits of church attendance are never discussed.
I thought that was a bit odd, but heck:

And, you know, it's not as if women in science don't spend A FUCKING LOT OF TIME considering childcare availability and career progress and whether you should have kids before or during or after your PhD or during postdocs or when you get tenure or before you get tenure or whether research science is even compatible with having kids NO WE NEVER THINK OF THOSE THINGS AT ALL, CHEERS, MIRIAM.
And if you think that was an overdose of capslock I won't treat you to my response to the idea that marriage and a PhD are things you can't do at the same time. Leaving aside the problems with the idea that every woman wants to get...okay, I'm going to go fume in my corner now.

And what's so fucking disappointing is that there is a huge discrepancy between women in science and women in leadership roles in science pretty much because of the difficulties Lucy describes.
To have some dipshit MD piss all over the idea that women should value their intellectual contribution to society makes me so fucking angry.

Thank you, Chris, I'm now as angry as Lucy is. There are some more reasons I'm an unfit mother: I should be in a psychiatric institution.

Well, let's be honest, even if a perfect solution to the child-having question emerged tomorrow women would still be underrepresented in leadership, because of a bunch of other stuff. But it doesn't *help*. And damned if I ever see or hear a male grad student considering how their career might impact their child-rearing.
Thank you, Chris, I’m now as angry as Lucy is. There are some more reasons I’m an unfit mother: I should be in a psychiatric institution.
You know that she just actually has no idea what she's talking about, right? Not that it helps, but.

Oh, I'm sure Emma knows that.

So that's why labs are equipped with fumehoods

Indeed.

She's a psychiatrist. So when she talks about locking someone up in a psychiatric institution? It's not quite so funny. And BDSM is still in the DSM.

Great analogy, Emma.

Is that a sex tip? If so, I've got a lot to learn.

“If Kinsey was alive today, and under my care, he’d be on high doses of medications. I would hospitalize him on a locked psychiatric unit because of the risk to his health from his compulsive sexual masochism.”
Dr Miriam Grossman
Holy shit. That sounded remarkably like Nurse Ratched.

Sorry, didn't think of that. That's...sickening, actually.
