  • Speaker: The Telecom XT Discussion,

    Rebecca et al

    This is where we live.
The blob disappearing under the cloud is a tower, owned by Telecom. The current coverage map suggests that we are just at the edge of coverage. We've had good reception speed in the past but lately it has been flaky to say the least. Coverage in Dunedin isn't much better so I'm not sure if our remote location is the cause. Do I smell a conspiracy?

I really do want to know if we can expect better phone reception and mobile broadband speed under the new network as we'll be upgrading soon by necessity.

We only got to test the mobile broadband coverage under the current regime because some of the contractors working on the tower were happy to show us how well their mobile broadband was working at our house. (Note to Vodafone: you wouldn't lend us a data device to test at our place so we couldn't even consider you, maybe you should think about that.)

  • Speaker: The Telecom XT Discussion,

I want to know about coverage. ... Please answer generally and with specific mention of mobile internet access.

Because we live off the beaten track, coverage is really important. At the moment mobile broadband is mobile narrow, sometimes nada, band. Our cell phones leap from great reception to no reception in the blink of an eye.

Can you ask telecom if they'll create a plan that gives great discounts on international calls to loyal customers? It is frustrating having to explain over and over to telecom staff that we don't have a landline so we don't want to be told, yet again, that we should make all our international calls on our landline and then to be told that they don't know what rates the plan they're recommending has for international calls off and on-peak times

I would like to express my support of comments made by Emma and Giovani.

Emma you've got us all talking/posting and that can only be a good thing. Maybe Tess will be won over by your eloquence.

That last episode of Boston Legal summed up why two consenting adults should get married. You get to be 'next-of-kin' with no arguements and all that entails legally.

We invent this contract called a Civil Union which apparently gives couples the same legal rights as a 'married' couples. Stinks of equal but different to me. One rite to rule them all I say.

We carried a copy of our marriage certificate when we travelled and the YHA in the UK still wouldn't let us share a bunk room.

  • Hard News: Stop the Enabling,

I do hope the repeal of s59 reduces children being hit and I hope it encourages more people to call the police when they see a chiild being hit.

20+ years ago while I was relxing in Manners Mall I saw a toddler being hit so hard in the head that s/he was thrown back at least a metre. No-one did a thing. The fact that the person who hit the child was large and scary looking might have had something to do with it. Or that by the time anyone had found a public phone, made a call, and explained the issue to an indifferent policeman, the family would have been long gone. Or just that, although many people would have been a bit disturbed by the incident, most people probably thought that it was nothing to do with them and that parents had a 'right' to hit their children.

I am sooo tempted to ask for a photo link. Or, I could use my over active imagination.

"Dear politician, please commit electoral suicide for my political cause"

A long standing (now retired) politician once told me that he came out in support of abortion and was told that it was political suicide. Next election his majority increased.

The silent majority is silent. We don't know what they think until they tell us.

  • Hard News: When that awful thing happens,

On the media response. I don't listen to talk-back so I can only imagine how awful it is. I listen to National Radio (oops Radio NZ National). I wish I could say I expect better from them. I listened to Morning Report as I drove to work today. Can't recall who was asking the questions but he was really trying to get the interviewees to say that they'd lived in fear of their neighbour - the gun crazed maniac. When someone says that they had barely spoken to the man and that he was big man, the next logical question isn't "did you feel intimidated by him". Thankfully Radio NZ could only get people with a brain to talk to them. People who refused to turn walking past a man in the street into a deep suspicion that he was a walking time-bomb.

On hunting - Pigs, goats, possum, rabbits and deer are a major menace in New Zealand. If anyone wants to see the damage caused by these pests they can take a walk in any NZ forest, or bush, or farm. Sure some hunters are a bit casual but most of the ones I meet are not sadists. Many rely on hunting to feed themselves, their families and dogs. Without hunting our property would be totally overrun. And four of the above five animals taste mighty good (I refuse to eat possum).
