  • Southerly: Refugee Status,

    You'll only be 100% - 66% dead. That's a hell of a lot better than 100%-33% dead. :-)

So if 33% compliant buildings resulted in zero deaths, what would 66% compliant buildings achieve? 33% increase in rebirths?

Oh, yeah. Yeah. It's Kevin isnt it?
    - What did you call me?
    - Kevin. It's Kevin.
    - Yeah. John.
    - Mike!
    - Yeah, Mike, tha's it!

    and

I'm having quite a few emotional problems...
    - Hamilton? Wellington? Palmerston North?
    - Grey Lynn.

That should be on a T-shirt.

  • Up Front: Day Five,

I think it conveys the experience in a really scarily tangible way.

Yes, by the end of it, I was shuddering uncontrollably every time a sizeable jolt registered. Whatever you have to calm your nerves, I suggest you take more. Well, within known safety limits of course.

  • Up Front: Day Five,

Amazing you managed to write that for us Emma, thanks.

Yesterday you tweeted a map showing all the aftershocks after the big one with a time schedule since the quake, and just watching that made my hair stand on end. Being from Bay of Plenty we had some experience of quakes, but nothing to compare with this.

Hoping like hell for you, and all the relatives and other people I know in Chch, that it settles down soon.

  • Hard News: And this week we look at ... Auckland!,

Now people who used to get the full body fire and brimstone treatment just make me sad and snarky.

Hmm, you mean the CraigSlap™ is on hiatus? Methinks it will be back.

Here's some Kim Deal to help save your desk.

  • Hard News: Little pieces of a big picture,

    Crikey, underneath an LA Times article;

New Zealand troops take over security as southern city begins clean-up after major earthquake.

    Was this;

WHAT'S ALL THE EXCITEMENT...NEW ZEALAND'S ON "THE RING OF FIRE" AND DOOMED TO DISAPPEAR UNDERWATER, SOONER OR LATER...WITH PACIFIC SEA LEVELS RISING AT ALARMING RATES, WHILE FRESH WATER LAKES AND RIVERS ARE DISAPPEARING, IT WILL PROBABLY BE SOONER. AND NEW ZEALAND'S NOT ESPECIALLY SAFE. THERE'S LOADS OF PROPERTY CRIME ON BOTH NORTH AND SOUTH ISLAND. AND THE OCCASIONAL HOMICIDE OR MUGGING. WHAT'S LAMENTALBE IS THAT NEW ZEALAND, BEING A COMMONWEALTH COUNTRY, MAINTAINS COURTS THAT TAKE AN ANNOYING CLEMENCY TOWARD FELONIOUS CRIME AND THE THUGS (THEY'RE NOT ALL MAORI, BY THE WAY) WITHIN ITS BORDERS.

Hopefully whatever they have in the way of moderators will take care of it, along with the others, but what brought that on? Whoever it is, maybe they should apply for a job at the...

On the question of telecomms, did Twitter overload at any point?

Not that I noticed, but Kanye was on a roll, so I'm guessing the pressure was probably more from that side.

  • Hard News: Little pieces of a big picture,

I'd object about this stuff less if the jokes weren't so sad and unimaginative.

    Arrrgghhh!

Yes, my bad, and having two colleagues down there at the time, and one who this morning told us her parents' home is a write-off, it is no time for being frivolous. Just that Milne comment was so out of left field, and when 'conjecture' becomes 'information' it can have unforeseen consequences. Like global misconceptions about our early demise. A lot of people's livelihoods will be hanging on the perception that Christchurch hasn't fallen off the face of the earth, and the HoS et al are not helping.

In slightly related news, the House of Travel team, based in a building in central Chch, managed to get themselves temporary premises, an answering service, and responded to an email and message within 60 minutes this morning. Quite impressive really.

  • Hard News: Little pieces of a big picture,

I found the Milne tweet made me giggle, especially when Emma commented on the rubbish collection.

'Men in Council marked trucks were looting from wheelie bins all over Christchurch, or at least those suburbs with collection days on Monday', local Metro writer said.

ETA: CCC has link up now it seems.
