  • Hard News: Emma Hart is a werewolf,

I'm, oh fuck it, disabled. I hate that word.

Christopher, I assure you that I am championing an approach that is not about deficits or deficiencies, and I'll be writing more about that here soon.

I was discussing over the weekend with various people - including the head of IT for the whole government - how to remove senseless barriers that prevent a wide range of disabled people including the Deaf community from contributing fully to our families, communities and economy.

I agree we need meaningful results rather than talk. We must work together with both disabled and non-disabled people on a long process of change. I was talking at Foo with a smart disability activist from a US background about our disturbing local absence of strong leadership and of clear, shared understandings about what is needed.

Where were the voices reminding the guy in Christchurch that the business sector's part to play includes gradually upggrading all their buildings so they work for everyone (not just their current staff)? That includes simple things like visual fire alarms and larger signs. It needs to be explained better in less black and white ways, and I wouldn't be holding my breath for council building inspectors to be leading the charge.

Don, don't worry you weren't alone - I just accepted after a while that there were far too many interesting and brilliant folk to keep up with in such a short time. Great to put faces to names, including yours, but now I am knackered.

I can verify the gleam in Emma's eyes after her killfest (and the red wine completed the look). Fantastic to spend time with her and others after so long online. Several of us had a great little aspie coalition going by the second night, and the whisky sharing was most enjoyable.

I am still overflowing with gratitude at being able to meet with influential and amazing people in such a low key and friendly space. As organisers, Russell, Nat and Jenine are taonga, and so are the attendees. The audience for the debate voted overwhelmingly in favour of "not fucked", by the way, and I came away with considerable hope.

Ben, your understanding of communication is outdated and woefully inadequate. Go get an education before you hold forth in venues like this. I won't waste my time going into detail given your blithe dismissal of what Linger has so eloquently contributed.

Do you mean Ana Samways being paid for his words without any attribution?

here is a quote I found online

Classy. It's one thing quoting a sentence in the middle of a long article, but not when the sentence is the whole thing.

Interestingly, the word "slut" appears at PAS all of 45 times (now 46). I have no idea how many of those occurences are the inspiration or efforts of Emma. :)

Ben, I do think you have a colonial mindset from what you have said here. But sadly I must depart now for a while to do some of that pesky stuff we call work or mahi or what have you.

How ironic to hear someone presumaly educated in NZ, at one of the vertices of the Polynesian triangle, bang on about the inadequacy of oral culture mnemonic techniques for navigation

Exactly - and those stick charts are honoured in the bright patterned carpets of the Auckland Central Library.
