one of the fireworks took off horizontally

Ouch! I’ve had a few run-ins with dodgy fireworks myself, including small bombs shooting along the ground instead of up in the air. There was one that fell right next to my hand and exploded – fortunately only a cut that healed pretty quickly. Then last year one landed on the bonnet of my car then threatened to crawl into the engine past the wipers, but fortunately bounced out and fell on the ground. It’s good that it’s mandatory to carry a fire extinguisher in your car here, but I’d rather not have to use mine. This year I decided the calls online to set off less fireworks this year for the sake of the air quality – inspired by January’s severe air pollution crisis – were a good idea, so I’m cutting down the amount I blow up this year. By the sounds of it, nobody else in our village is cooperating, though.

Here’s our village opera stage – could use a little paint and bigger 福 characters, I reckon.

The eagle doing his duty. It's a bit hazy already, but I suspect that's half natural haze and half from coal heating stoves and vehicle exhaust. We'll see what the firework smoke does to the air tomorrow...

Looks very cool... look forward to some action piccies of opera and fireworks through the smoky-haze.

Don't know if there'll be any opera, and I haven't heard the village yangge troupe yet, although I did hear somebody comment that there won't be any yangge this year. But I'll try.

Another lovely evening at Muriwai, after the sun has gone down. There was a strong wind this evening and the gannets were going round and round as trey tried to land, like naval pilots trying to land on a aircraft carrier in heavy seas. They'd get 'waved off' by a nip from gannets neath them if they had the approach wrong and would have to go round and try again.

So the rumours I heard about the lack of yangge were wrong. They came nearby this evening.

    And the drummers.

What a glorious summer it’s been all things considered. This morning, Miss Ruby and I went to Mangere Mountain. There were rabbits in them thar hills – we could see them but the dogs for some reason had no idea they were there. And to top it all off, we had an icecream at the Strawberry Farm on McKenzie Rd. Lovely. And those of you who know Ruby's story and have been part of her journey - that would be Sache and Lilith, amongst others - will know that this last photo is the most important. I'm always reasonably careful about taking her around large groups of people because she can get a bit stressed, but she's much more relaxed about such things now. She had people passing her by in great numbers, and didn't flicker an eyelash.

It's a good walk is Mangere mountain. I love the view you get of the Manukau from up there.

Alas, looking out my window I see that Grumpy Cat's reign on Big King has now come to an end.

The gals were telling me last night - and Fabulous Cat too! It really pisses me off the way the Council do that. There's been some truly wonderful art on that water tower over the last 12 yrs, and they bloody paint over all of it, the Philistines.

  • Bruce Buckman,

And this time they used a dark ugly grey that covers the artwork only whereas last time the did a large section of light grey that was almost like a fresh canvas. Looking at it now, it's 10 times uglier than any artwork. Paul Walsh will have to make another visit: http://www.facebook.com/pages/Paul-Walsh-artist-illustrator/133655440004637

Dead crab in a rock pool

Also saw a seagull feasting on a dead eel, only to have it snatched away by a gaggle of small boys. Later we came accross the eel again, this time being buried on the busy inner city beach by small boys.

It had been like this so long, I was shocked to see it looking like this yesterday…… that's a whole lot of hard work that's gone on under wraps at the Salon Bohemienne!

What beach is that Nora? The cliffs remind me a bit of Torbay, but I presume it's further south than that.

good spotting, it's the cliffy beaches just beyond Takapuna, St Leonards etc. a real contrast to the swarms at Takapuna itself.

    1. Takapuna wasn’t that crowded. I was there yesterday.

    2. Well patronized, I’d call it. Everyone who was there seemed to be having fun.

    3. The kind of day you just stand around and chat :-)
