  • Ian Dalziel, in reply to Lilith __,

Do you know how Mark is, these days?
He taught me art in the 7th form, many moons ago...

    Was that at Hagley?
I don't know him, but I believe he lives and works in Oxford (or Loburn) these days, making paper making machines and, I assume, marks on paper still...
    from the Artists.co.nz site
and his own site (I think)

It was. He was such a kind and inspiring teacher. That was around the time he turned the school pool into a papermaking vat, and made pool-sized sheets of paper into backdrops for the Limbs Dance Company. Their dancing made the paper sway and ripple.

Thanks for the links. Maybe I’ll send him a message. :-)

BTW Loburn isn't a place, it's a state of mind. I've never understood those "Welcome to Loburn" signs, which appear to mark a patch of ground indistinguishable from its surroundings.

Mind you, I've been to Paradise (truly!*) and that has no outward sign at all. I guess you're supposed to know when you find it. :-)

    *near Glenorchy.

    I’ve been to Paradise …

is it still run for the benefit of the NZ Spinal Trust?
one of the more accessible paradises on Earth I believe…

It would seem so! Disconcertingly, Paradise has a webpage. Oh the bathos!!

  • Lilith __,

That link in the Capture twit-stream is worth repeating here: Photographs Not Taken.

I think it's absolutely true that taking a photo takes you out of the moment; but also, looking at a photo later can take you back to that moment, and show you things you missed, particularly in a crowded setting. And without photos, memories often fade, dissolve, and blur together.

  • JacksonP,

I keep going back to it. It's like there's a light source inside every column; every brick.

Would love to see the Melbourne one larger too.

    More. We want more!

    Ok, calming down now.

  • Sofie Bribiesca,

Curious about the grey walls in the Melbourne shot. Is that council privacy laws against views into neighbouring buildings, or blanked advertising or what? Fantastic photo. We certainly don't see enough of Alex's photos in my opinion.

Alex's HDR is stunning. It's a tricky technique that all too often seems to get the better of those who attempt it.
