  • TracyMac,

Maybe I'll check out Deezer - at least they pay relatively decently. What none of these figures make clear is what exactly is a "stream" - is it an entire track or, say, at least 30% of one?

As for Spotify, it's also not clear whether they pay differently per stream depending on whether it was played by a paid subscriber or not. I was under the impression there were different rates at one stage, although the murkiness around it made me stop paying (hate the ads, though - what is it about Aussie advertising and their use of people with the most strident Strine accents ever? The only people I personally know who talk like that are bogan Queenslanders (I use "bogan" with due affection, btw)).

As for publishing fees, I really don't get any justification why it'd be a significantly different percentage to radio play, given the "discount" applied to streaming, full stop.

  • Gareth Shute,

30 seconds counts as a stream. That's supposedly why new pop acts frontload their songs with hooks and musical ideas - they just don't want you to click away until the first 30secs is up.

Largely cut off from the North Island as we are again, chchch punters have the Electric Avenue festival in Chch's Hagley Park this Saturday (24th) to buoy up their spirits - The D4, Primal Scream, Dizzee Rsacal, Katchafire and many acts I've never heard of...

That looks like the Kraftwerk pic that NME ran at the time of their late 70s London show, with the caption "This is what our fathers died to save us from".

As I understand it, the Big Three did their own negotiations with Spotify and came out with a split that heavily favours record labels and doesn't do much for publishers – ie, the inverse of the royalty system on US radio.

I think Primal Scream did make it to ChChCh, and they were definitely at the Powerstation in Auckland last Sunday night, where the continuing lack of bass player left a big gap in the sound. Pictured: Bobby Gillespie.
