  • Tom Semmens,

Umm, George Darroch is a Green Party activist.

So that explains his occassional dreary and humourless political correctness.

    humourless political correctness

There really is no space for this "dreary and humourless" phrase in our discussions. Accusations of 'political correctness' usually means, 'I don't like what this person is saying so I will shut down any further debate'. To be fair, we should also consider that 'political correctness' is a characteristic across the political spectrum eg for ACT, it mean primacy of the free market, dismissal of alternative perspectives, a fear of democracy.

  • George Darroch,

Would have thought, George, that you'd be busy packing your mansion for the trip back to Godzone (I'm assuming you came from here) ready to make the most of the Nat/Act bulldozer tenders about to be issued, and too busy to trawl PA.

Thanks Quo, that made my day. Off to be humourless and dreary at a climate change protest...

  • George Darroch,

Ubuntu. I'm too hairshirted, geeky and poor to contemplate a Mac.

Seriously though, there was a point to my criticism. Using hyperbolic metaphors with tenuous connection to the point at hand weakens your argument and discredits you.

It's not like New Zealand is lacking in metaphors for describing this style of Government. Simply mentioning Douglas, or "revolution" ("revolution 2.0"?) is enough to connote the style of rapid forced change without reference to the population being conducted here.

    To quote from Roger Douglas,

    Second Principle:

“Implement reform in quantum leaps, using large packages. Do not try to advance one step at a time. Define your objectives clearly and move towards them by quantum leaps. Otherwise the interest groups will have time to mobilise and drag you down.”

    Third principle:

“Speed is essential - it is impossible to go too fast.”

    Fourth principle:

“Once you start the momentum, never let it stop rolling.”

    Fifth principle:

“Consistency + credibility = economic confidence.”

(source, his fascinating website, via The Standard)

There's simply no need to invoke the ghosts of Europe, when we have our own spectres haunting the backbenches and providing inspiration.

What Jackie said. Clearly those who consider early childhood teachers as deficient in the high falutin' conversation dept have never witnessed them talking about competent learners, provocations, and power dynamics.

I really liked your list of questions about Richard Worth David (and I wish someone would have the guts to ask Bain if he did it too). As with several other media stories of late (such as the Tony Veitch stuff) I really wish we had news rooms staffed with people paid enough and given enough time to think up good questions, research them, and ask them.

Some friends of ours were travelling through Queensland once and decided to stop for fruit at the first greengrocer's who could spell based on the signs by the side of the road.

800 miles later, they had a kebab.

During last week, the Academy cinema in Auckland was listing its screenings of "Trouble is My Business"*, as being about the experiences of the "Assistant Principle" at Aorere College. I suggested they change it and the Weekend Herald did have"Principal".

Final two questions to the PM in this afternoon's press conference:
Have you had someone review the appointments Dr Worth made while he was minister? Answer: "No." Are you going to? Answer: "No."

Did that happen? I'll have to give our Great Blend sponsors a ribbing about that. Perhaps I'll make it a grammar-contingent deal ...

There was a funny little spell where the wingnuts were rushing around telling each other they'd sell their Apple shares in protest at Al Gore joining the board. Anyone who did, of course, would have racked up an EPIC INVESTMENT FAIL ...
