  • Joe Wylie,

I bought NZ PhotoForum back in 1977 when these pics were the cover story, and I'm not even a photographer. Wonderful to see again.

  • JacksonP,

    1957 VW, Oval window.

The only car I've ever owned that had mushrooms growing in it.

Is this where we discover the foolhardiness of launching a blog at the same time as The Word of the Year? Oh well.

    Capture away...

Now that's embarrassing. I even followed my own instructions.

First car, 1928 Ford A. Also featured my first flame job, which was to discourage my Dad from borrowing it, but that didn't deter him.
Drove around the North Island in it with my mechanical genius brother when I was 16. Not fast, but even on the steepest hills it pulled like 40 bastards.

Also the family folding Kodak had a light leak.

I am both delighted and excited to see some of this legendary series of photographs here.

    That is all.

This happened to me once. Did you change either your gravy, or the email address associated with it? If neither, then it's probably Gravatar gremlins.

  • Steve Barnes,

    Time for a wee rant.
I think it is appalling that the powers that be decided that Cars on Queen Street, which used to be a regular Friday night event, was deemed to be a bad thing.
It's almost like them saying "If we didn't organise it it is wrong"
I could say the same about the Occupy movement on Aotea Square, it is the best thing that has happened there since... well, ever and bugger the grass. Humph, grrrrr.

My kids have seen the Herbie movies - they like to spot "Beetle cars". I am required to photograph said cars.

Cool to see some other photos from the series!

Like Joe, I also bought the NZ Photoforum mag with the shots from the original exhibition back in 1977 and still have it.

My older sister and her boyfriend spent a lot of time cruising Queen St in that period and I went along with them a few times - I was about 14 at the time and remember it fondly.

Flash black car - Mark 1 Zephyr 6 in Fenton St, Rotorua, January 1954 - the badge of office of head cop leading the entourage for Queen Elizabeth II. Rephotographed from contact print from my mother's Box Brownie. She saw flash cars parked by the road, realised from her local knowledge they were waiting outside Guide Rangi's house, the Queen was in town with nothing on the official programme but it was lunchtime - we stopped to await developments.

My Dad stands at right, proudly erect as befitting the owner of a new 3-cylinder Bradford van, unlike the other gents abasing themselves before the Mark 1. It's very shiny, and thereby hangs a tale. Family legend states that I, at the age of 18 months, got a little restless waiting for who knew what and threw a stone that hit said shiny car, and the cop said in gruff but suitably tolerant voice, "Oi! I spent all morning polishing this car!"

For all that, Mum captioned it "Pohutu Geyser plays for the Queen".

And relevelled and closer in, royal consort two paces back and various other shady characters. Is that a real huia feather in hair of attendant outside the gate? Was the Quuen's limousine's radio aerial a match for the cop's?
