  • ChrisW, in reply to Damian Christie,

thanks to an interview (transcribed here) I also have hanging in pride of place at home the third photo down on that interview - the young Maori boy singing into the edmonds baking powder tin at the front of the class, from 1963.

Interesting interview, thanks. Not sure whether that title of your Ans Westra photo is as she wrote it, but Whatatutu would better be described as near Gisborne rather than Wairoa. It's say 45km inland of Gisborne - relating it to Wairoa would be like helping a South Islander by describing Helensville as near Hamilton.

One might even call that irony. ;-)

I took photos of that wall too this year. But yours are better.

Street scene, Gisborne on a quiet Saturday afternoon, 2011. No need for horse or rider to have any regard to the graphic sign.

Not an everyday sight, but, well, it is Gisborne.

Sometimes you gotta lie on the ground..... :) Your photos are excellent Jackson. I can't see me ever being any better than anyone else's, but that's how I roll.
However having said that, Doug Richard's are fantasmo!

Yeah, for the record, that's how it appears in her book.

Nice, Andrew. Is this the same model? Blair Street, Wellington, 4 March 2011.

I love that graf art too Sofie. I'm sure you agree, taking photos of graf art (for the most part) isn't about the photography, it's about the art, so I always feel odd sort of 'claiming it' as a photograph. Although I suppose you could say the same about taking a picture of a supermodel or something, when that's clearly not true.

Here's one I took in Dunedin, on my rollei. I don't often use colour film in it, but when I do I love the results.

Could have been a publisher's work, as for "Washday" purportedly near Taihape.

Could be. It was in Handboek, the beautiful compilation of her photography published in 2004. Not sure where that came from - the photo (rather crudely cropped) also appears in 1967's "Maori", but annoyingly none of the photos in that book have any credits.

The opposite of a city scene, I guess. Taken this morning at Kakamatua, with the very handy Sony Bloggie camera.

    What lurks...

While cleaning the garage for some fine visitors tomorrow, this fellow came out from behind the curtain.

    Yikes!

    See, right there .Loving it.

    Thanks Sofie. ;-)

Jackson, that is not a spider. This is a spider!

On a smaller scale, I was full of admiration for this tiny jumping spider who'd bagged a fly almost as big as itself.

Jumping spiders cute. Funnelwebs not so much.

I don't have a best photo of the year (still time, right?) so I am posting one of the few images I have that makes me laugh out loud, in keeping with Doug's great photos. This is from an anti-nuclear protest in London in 1996. Scanner a bit dodgy.

I actually jumped back from the screen just then. Thanks for that. ;-)

Turns out I'm the one who needed to be warned. It's so great you're getting into this PA thing by the way. While there are lots of photos going on Twitter and Facebook etc, this does seem different. Not sure how I'd define yet. Or if I'd even bother trying. It has a lot to do with the people though, that much is clear.

    A song for spiders...

I think I only counted 8. Might be the double vision effect of the blurry web?

But aren't there 2 in front and 4 down each side?

Thanks for the Cure. I'd forgotten the video was so funny. :-)
