Sacha - re. the Cantabrians Unite event of Sunday May 6:
You seem to be aware of Hugh Pavletich's initiatives, and Hebe has alluded elsewhere to the murky aims of the Cantabrians Unite group with which he's involved. Mike Coleman, one of the better speakers from February's event, was notably absent. According to protest organiser Peter Lynch they'd dispensed with him because he'd become too publicly aligned with Labour, and a bipartisan approach was vital when dealing with Brownlee et al. While Lynch appears to be a thoroughly decent guy, Coleman's past performance simply doesn't bear that out.Personally I'm repelled by the revelations of high-handed and authoritarian treatment of people of proven goodwill who'd assumed Cantabrians Unite to be an organisation of widely inclusive opposition. Fool me twice, shame on me.

Joe, I would like you to rephrase that: I am not ascribing anything murky to Cantabrians Unite.
The group seems to me to be one gathered in the heat of the moment by many people with disparate agendas. Predictably, it hasn't gelled in the way the organisers seem to think it might and now is breaking apart again.
That said, many people are desperate for a voice, representation, and someone or something to help them with some massive problems. They are feeling alone and vulnerable when it comes to protecting their homes and (wider) families, businesses and land: against earthquakes, against the huge insurance companies with their armies of lawyers, against council bureaucracy for starters.
My feeling is that leadership is lacking, but then it would take an exceptional leader in these times to knit people together. Maybe that is the starting point we need: the leaders working together for the residents, landowners, business owners and everyone that makes a city a city.

Sorry Hebe, bad paraphrasing on my part then, here's the line from your post:
"I tend to think that the protests are Hugh Pavletich and the Lynches (David Lynch is a brother) way of diverting the left and the vulnerable."Agree with all of your observations above. Speaking purely for myself, having contributed to CU's cause, both in cash and kind, I've now seen enough to convince me that they're potentially every bit as contemptuous of the ordinary people of Christchurch as those they came together to oppose.

Can not Mike Coleman continue to advocate for the ordinary people by setting up another branch as it were and starting fresh with say advocates like you Joe. There must be a large group out there in need.Maybe even approach Dyson,Dalziel and Cosgrove to highlight the emerging issues raised here. As they say Kia Kaha.
As an aside, it's kinda cute you jumped to this capture thread from t'other capture thread, when it got threadjacked once before by mistake. The hardest thing being, there is politics in everthing, even images, eh? {:)

Sofie I'm sure we'll be hearing plenty more from Mike Coleman. Here he is about 3 weeks back on CTV.
As for Labour, I guess it's up to them. Megan Woods has spoken up lately, just a teensy bit but it's a start. There's an unbelievably crude but vociferous clobbering machine that goes into shrieking overdrive in the Press's online comments whenever Lianne Dalziel so much as takes a public breath.
And Capture, I rather wish I'd been at the Sumner event instead, but you have to see these things through.

It is so hard to talk Christchurch and stay on one theme! Like the city the best, the worst. the beautiful and the ugly are all hanging out. A crazy mix-up time; like everything (including basic assumptions, ethics, beliefs) has been thrown up in the air and is slowly floating down to earth in new patterns. And we each try to make sense of our new reality on a daily basis.
Ironic when Greg and I chose to stay here to bring up our late-life babes because it was the "safest" and most family-connected (for us) of the NZ cities. None of that holds true any more. My deep thought often: I dunno any more about anything.

Thanks Joe. Not sure Labour is yet reconstructed enough to be the answer either.

Sofie Bribiesca, in reply to
You should not be worrying about that Hebe, you should just approach Labour anyway. Point out why you have concerns about approaching them. Be honest, but you don't need to worry about where Labour are at. Labour are in the opposition. Remind them of your views by all means.Start firing off emails.

I think if I was down there, it would be necessary for me to be out protesting.I can't stand the way Cantabs are being treated by the Government/Insurance rip off.
But yes, the Sumner event looks bright and cheerfulish. -

All good with me. Both really invite discussion for the realities in navigating the 'new Christchurch'.
Thanks for all the input.

I actually think if it just was left up to the citizens to decide Chch's outcome, a helluva lot more would have been achieved by now.

Totally free!
(If the tribe charges, I will pay it from my fee-) -
E Russell - maybe that could be a chance for an Otautahi/ChChCh meet-up?

Oh bugger the politics of all hues. I want to see co-operation and consensus for the rebuild. that's all: I want them all to Play Nicely Together (enunciated like a mother of multiples with years in the sandpit behind her).

E Hebe - used to be the old hui-a-tau -same thing, but a bit different - "they" are planning festive - um -stuff..
The dates & place: Lincoln events centre: 21st-23rd November -Te Taumutu hosting-
hui-a-iwi (some bureaucrat has invented this - if it was anything to do with 'huia' in the south, my antennae would have been sooo far out there-)
I would take paticular joy in meeting you & the others there - arohanui mai na n/n Keri -

Fantastic! But it's a long way in the future -- do tell us if you're likely to be in Otautahi before then. We could all attempt to drink ourselves to death with chilli shockolades. Or something. :-) Arohanui to you.

I've been working on a....urrrm, poetic thing for Huia Publishers...for the past 7 years...they probably hate me, because it has transgressed all contractual time lines, but - because I love Brian & Robyn , because I love huia, because I will do my best by Huia publishers, I WILL do my best-
