1965 Superminx. Bought it after returning from overseas in 1991. Had to rebuild the clutch in Wellington before driving it back to Auckland. Was a great car, all things being treacle.

My grandmother's Morris Minor holds special memories - the car is long gone but seeing a Morris Minor brings back the memories of my beloved grandmother.

Singapore 1958. My little bro' in the front yard with the family station wagon.

We took the 1956 Plymouth back to NZ in 1960 (transit paid for by Her Majesty) and sold it in 1964, with Mum and Dad almost doubling the money they paid for it in '58.

  • Islander, in reply to Christopher Dempsey,

My first car was a Morris series E 1948 – I wish I had a photo of it, but I didnt own
    a camera then…
Drove from ChCh to Queenstown when I was 18 – it broke its axle on the way down
from Skippers, but was resusitated by a small local garage, so I drove it back to North Beach. 4 days of freedom, terror, despair, and home-going chortlement, not able to experienced the same way now…

Sold it shortly afterwards to pay for my 1st year of Law (Canterbury University)

I have a DVD to show you soon. Of the 1958 Melbourne Grand Prix. Dad isn't one of the stars, it has to be said. But by god, those race cars were sexy bastards.

    That's really quite lovely.

Moved to try and find those old photos of the family Velox now.

Delightful pic. Possibly the only one of that model to make it to NZ. Despite being highly sought after, classic wagons were as rare as rocking horse droppings here thanks to import restrictions. Chrysler/Dodge/Plymouth started the tailfin trend that year. They went higher and sharkier than Cadillac, even persisting into the early 60s when it suddenly became uncool.

It was sold to a guy my parents knew vaguely, and it was still going strong in the late 1970s when we last heard of it (on Herald Island).

Dad two toned it in the early 1960s so that image is fairly close to the way it looked when sold.

We also had a '52 Buick Sedan but that was left behind in Singapore. It was a beast I'm told.

And one more, taken by Dad in the mid to late 1960s. I don't need to tell anyone where I guess.

A propos of cars in the 60’s, this is what all the best babies were wearing. And yes, the car is a Morris Minor. (Excuse the quality but my mother has been known to scrapbook, and all my baby photos are in my personal one. Stuck in. Can’t get them out. Hey ho. )

  • Joe Wylie, in reply to Sofie Bribiesca,

Although many of Charles's components date from the late 1920s he's registered as a 1967 Charles, so named for the Mr Charles who rebuilt him in his present jeeplike form. Cherished and significantly but subtly upgraded by my brother since the 1970s, Charles even serves as a mobile platform for the stepladder when trimming the macrocarpa hedge that fronts his home.

Sadly, after an Easter weekend excursion to Melbourne, (one only knows where that idea came from late on the Thursday night, in a Gondola, at the Easter show in Sydney) my flat mates car had to be left to a local farmer who was happy to convert the dubby to a corn picker of all things. The car was at it's end for road use and we were still on our weekend excursion . We, had to hitch and bus back with one on crutches, (and a surf board)
When I think about it ,that farmer was really pretty helpful.Of course I had no idea at the time.

I come from great "flash cars" stock (my dad being an A-grade mechanic with a bent for American style) but my own contribution is pathetic: one Austin Mini, one GTi Peugeot and an A4 Audi... This is my favourite Kodachrome ... my dad and I at National Park with his 1958 Plymouth Savoy... still time to get my bogan on and get some fins... the desire is there!

And for car lovers who may not know of this, there is a photographer in Greytown who has a related series of captures called "cars on main street"... can't believe the beauties gracing that town. Try this link (I hope it works) for some of NZ's finest old car (south of those big hills, of course).

Thank you, something to delight everyone there, plus a few to offend the aesthetic sensibilities :-) Love the grass-covered car.
I don't know whether it's my browser, but it seems the photos deserve a better presentation. The slideshow seems to only work at it's own pace, and the thumbnail index feels a slippery little devil to navigate.
