It was. The beauty is still there, just not in the buildings any more.

I hope those aren't too upsetting, Hebe. I was wondering when and where I should share some of my Christchurch photos. I have lovely ones of the Botanic Gardens and of the city centre from a number of holidays previous to 2010. And then some from when I went last year. Those were taken surreptitiously from a car as we went past because I didn't want to be so blatant about it. I just wanted a record for myself, to garner some understanding, which of course, not living down there, I can not even get close to coming to. In the meantime, I send hugs. Great big embracing ones.

I don't find them upsetting; share away , it is good to have the record. I wish it were all still there for my children's sake, but I don't agree with the idea of rebuilding immediately. Most of these old buildings, including the destroyed cathedrals, took decades to build and were aggregations of generations of craftspeople's work and community money. Why do we expect them to be rebuilt within five, 10, or 20 years? I loved the idea of raising a steeple in the Square that was suggested by an American; a real community project. I wonder where it got to.
Bugger I've just hijacked the thread...

Holiday Escapism..
In case Neil Gaiman fans hadn't noticed, Stardust is on TV3 tonight (Tuesday 10 Jan) at 7.30pm - ad astra - with ads, sadly! -
I'm loving the pre-quake photos, Jackie. And your stories, Hebe. And thanks for the tip, Ian. Loved Stardust, I wonder if the adaptation is any good.

BTW I wonder if anyone can top this for a cute beach-holiday photo?

Sooo cute. Feeding two is like feeding little birds.

That Art gallery is excellent. I love it. My partner wrote one of the speeches for the opening and, as an old counterculture-dweller, had a long memory of the art establishment in this city and their horror at the then new and "uncivilised" artists. So he took his dead friends Tony Fomison and Phil Clairmont along by dropping them in the speech (they were the only artists mentioned in any of the many speeches).

Last night felt like that pic. What time did you take it? My new screensaver.

How odd that is. But yes, it's an excellent gallery.

I do like this tree.
Monterey cypress, aka macrocarpa.
Like the other contender for NZ's most widespread exotic tree, it's a vulnerable survivor in its tiny central Californian homeland.
