Today’s roaming. In classic Beijing style, an old industrial estate all gussied up and turned all arty farty.
Intriguing. What else is there?

Didn't get much chance for a look around. When we arrived we had to find our studio, the map very conveniently didn't have names on it, and they couldn't seem to think to tell us which number their studio was, but did think to jump on a bike and ride down to the gate to meet us. Then afterwards the wee one was rather exhausted. And besides, it's cold, damp, grey, and heavily polluted (I mean, by Beijing standards, in which what the rest of the world calls heavy pollution is the default setting), so not really taking the baby for a walk kinda weather. I did see a few other photography studios, there was the rather Bacchanalianly named place I mentioned, but I couldn't see anything to tell me whether that was a bar, a liquor store, or both. Otherwise it looked like the usual mix of studios, galleries, bars, cafes, general arty trendiness, just like out at the more famous 798, but much more compact.
Oh, and silly me, in this modern world we have things like Google. Their website says "是传媒、广告、艺术、美术、动漫、影视等行业的聚集地" - it's a base for industries such as media, advertising, art, animation, film and television. I include the Chinese because I never thought there was a difference between 艺术 and 美术 and the dictionaries don't help, except that 美术 may refer specifically to painting. What I did get close enough to identify was either Bacchanalian or photographic in nature.

Sounds like you are enjoying Fatherhood Chris :)
Well, it certainly has its perks. But we had a bit of trouble getting that carseat into the car, what with short seatbelts and staff at a carparts market laughing in my wife's face when she asked for stuff that should easily available, and I was just really happy to have her both safe and comfortable.

I meant to add: So please, people, if you want your documents translated well, write them properly. That is not the only example of an utterly pointless and unnecessary ambiguity I've come across and they are exceedingly frustrating when you're trying to translate. Not sure if any of you are ever in need of a translator, but bear that in mind just in case....

The seem to be quite deliberately putting on an aerobatics display.

How is that for take off?
That is so good on so many levels.

It takes years of training to get them to do that.

Flying protocol: Birds have right of way no matter what.

hmmm.... gulls flying in formation.... a squadron of gulls lining up for take off.... These gulls seem to be taking on quite a military demeanour. Should we be worried? Or is this the RNZAF's response to its miserly budget?

Just the usual avian holiday hi-jinks.

xLntHell yeah. A capture in the best sense.

Sadly YouTube and China's Net Nanny have a bit of an unresolved disagreement. And where I am is rather lacking in avian anything, let alone holiday hi-jinks. Dunno if they're frozen out or choked out (our air has been very flavoursome the last few days), but they ain't here. They must be all down your way holiday hi-jinking. But I do consider myself reassured.

Thanks guys. Had just cranked up my scooter to go home when this gent started to cross the road and luckily i had my point and shoot around my neck. Could not have set this one up if i tried.

Often the best ones are a bit like that. It really is a great shot.

Whilst you are around Gudren, I did a bit of Jacaranda spotting when returning to Auckland the other day. Got 44 along State hwy 1, so am happy to pass on the Tree is alive and well in the North Island.

Last time I was in Hastings I was astonished at the number of silk trees. Every second front yard seemed to have one. Maybe obeying a bylaw? :-)

trees a crowd...

I spotted lots of Jacarandas in Napier this week, too...
I was also forced to enjoy a wedding at Black Barn and spend an idyllic day at Waimarama, life is rough sometimes...
;- )
(and I also didn't notice the 4.7 quake there on Wednesday, but it was 25km deep and in the middle of the night, luxury...) -

What earthquake-snobs we've become ;-)

Another takeoff. Gull playing chicken with the waves, Ocean View beach, Dunedin.
When I arrived in Dn the weather was appalling. But I had 2.5 days of stunningly hot weather, too. This was one of the lovely days, a beautiful evening on the beach. The waves were big and foamy, breaking more with a muffled thud than a crash. Hardly anyone about except the seagulls and oystercatchers. Bliss.

holiday traffic. Title is "Did you get a ticket in 2012? - 50 years of Spring Festival [i.e. Chinese New Year] in pictures. Text is all in Chinese, but the pictures speak for themselves. Some of those older photos were still true when I first arrived in China (and not just police in green and the lack of high speed trains. I've certainly seen plenty of desperate people climb through the train windows, hanging from and even sleeping on luggage racks). The overcrowding forcing train stations to set up temporary structures on their forecourts hasn't changed at all. So, if you don't have family in China, do not try to travel here at Chinese New Year.
Snow is forecast. Hope it comes soon, because this air is foul, and I'd like the snow out of the way before I have to cross a mountain range in a couple of days.

Translation error. Should say: 50 years of Spring Festival transport in pictures.

Sofie, thanks for hunting down those trees. I have yet to see one up close. Who knows eventually i might visit the northern parts of this country and have the privilege.
Lilith i take this gull is waiting for clearance to take off. Propellers are turning so to speak.

Chris, crossing a mountain range in China? I remember seeing a movie called "The Road Home" In a way this reminds of of that. Very nice cinematography.
