  • Nora Leggs, in reply to BenWilson,

my sunflowers in the back seem to have finally brought actual honeybees back to my garden

    Rosemary keeps them humming along....

    Thrush?

    Starling.

Deserves a better response, especially after that beautifully well done duck on the blue thread. Another starling through window-glass the other day, scoffing a fig. (So this is Fig. 1) The degree of spottiness is highly variable.

Fig. 2 and Fig. 3 - Starling is in boots and all. These from closer, at my parents' bird-feeder, in October a few years ago. Yellow bill for the breeding season. Each arrowhead/triangular white spot is a feather tip.

The weirdest potato in the world came out of our backyard today.

A mighty peculiar potato! Have you eaten it yet?

  • Hebe, in reply to Nora Leggs,

    Have you eaten it yet?

No, it is 5 to 6cm high, so not much of a meal there! Technically it is two potatoes: one with Mickey Mouse ears and another dangling on the cord (stolon?) I wish I had taken a photo of the two rude tomatoes we harvested a few weeks ago. they were remarkably, er, protuberant. I am trying also to capture a photo of Bossy Flossy with no clothes on: she is moulting horribly. She seems aware of her tattiness and runs into the bushes when anyone comes near.

Peculiar veges and gargoyle animals: suburban Kiwi gothic.

A couple of photos from our trip across the Mojave Desert this weekend, following the old Route 66 (Amboy CA in particular)

I have to ask, is there a sister town called Pins?

Love the house with the tree coming out the top - that's indoor outdoor flow!

  • Geoff Lealand, in reply to Nora Leggs,

Named after rock features nearby--pinnacles with wind-blown holes in them, But Needles is a prickly sort of town--gets up to 49c in summer and if it rains, it is hot rain, The end point of the journey of the Joad family and the starting point of Two-lane Blacktop

If you ever get there, I recommend breakfast at the Wheelhouse Restaurant ("Favourite amongst locals since 1978"). But avoid Porky's (next to the Desert Mirage Motel) as the food is horrible.

  • Geoff Lealand,

What was most extraordinary was driving by volcano cones, surrounded by extensive ancient lava flows. Really empty roads too across the Mohave Desert.

  • Jos,

I was going to suggest an orange thread, this sure looks like the start!

Either that or a crazy car thread, I like shrinking them to fit. I like this little Porsche, Pity the owner will probably never see the photo. :)
