  • Kyle Matthews,

How do you stop little worms getting into your carrots?

I'm not sure about those little worms, but I heard that mixing pine needles in the soil around potatoes stops the worms that attack them.

Lost my garden when I moved so haven't had the opportunity to test.

partly for their charm but also for their aphid hoovering capabilities.

Did some one mention lady birds?

Some pictures from New Brighton, on a sparkling spring Sunday.

Oh those glorious Canterbury skies! Down here in Otago skies are beautiful in a different way. Yesterday we were told to expect thunderstorms, and although none eventuated the clouds were busy doing all kinds of things…

    Hi Sofie, what a beauty!

In response to your earlier mention of Spring cleaning, I can't resist posting this photo! It originally appeared with my article on the virtues of cleaning! Please don't fall into the error of imagining me to be any kind of paragon in that department - far from it. I have my moments of it, but a great acreages of space in between! :-) However, the spring light certainly does show up the need for it!

There's a solution for that! Keep the curtains drawn. :-)

    Kidding.

We had hailstorms in the night, but today is another improbably gorgeous one. I've got all the doors open.

Bees are cool. We have some bees that hang around us. There is organic honey around and the Bee Venom masks etc around the corner and they are very comfortable to bee around. They're really quite happy.

I like the way the pretty weeds have been spared by the mower : )

It was at the Church in the centre of Hanmer the week before last Christmas – maybe the weedeater wielder came a day or two after the mower because the lawns were shorn. I liked the featheriness of the grass.

    Weeds

    More weeds

Weed/s are a nuisance and some weed is good, but yours look like daisies and grass and they are not weeds, they are just strong. (in my book.)
Here is a weed in our garden. Bloody Pongas ;)

a weed in our garden. Bloody Pongas

Bloody ponga indeed! Swap you the ponga infestation for the bloody daisies. Here I am lusting after the pricey ponga down here for putting in my garden, and plotting wholesale daisy carnage. and you up there the reverse.

I like weed-type rampant flowering plants: borage, nasturtiums, daisies, phacelia, marigolds, echinacea. These all have the great plus of bee-friendliness; I'm planting lots of bee-and butterfly hosts this year and a native bush out in the front yard. Last year was a write-off garden-wise because we were initially told our house would be picked up, moved down the backyard (flattening everything ) and moved back when repiling was done. Now the plan is to repair in situ thank goodness, so yay there is a point to gardening again!

This week, according to the moon calendar was the best time for planting so I have been in the sun planting trays of organic tomato seeds: Tigerella, Gardeners Delight, Black Krim, Marmande (from the very wonderful Franchi Seeds), Tommy Toe, Roma. And flowers and Italian cooking thyme.
