I read that as "uptight orange things" and immediately thought of dear old Dame Edna.

Dunedin Botanic Gardens
I love your pictures David. Are you carrying some black-back-drop-cloth with you, or is it just conveniently dark in the Dunedin botanic gardens?

The later, more or less- It is a tree rich gardens, so if a flower is in direct sun you can probably line up an angle where the background is in shadow that looks black in contrast (and the picture exposure based on the very brightly lit flower). That said, I also have my camera set to 1/3 of a stop darker exposure than the defaults, as I prefer the results that gives (particularly in direct sun).

Hey Jackie, great to see your piccies, love that one above the toetoe, and love that 'slice of focus' effect on your camera too, gives all those planty pictures a lovely look.
And David, you mother's garden looks gorgeous : )

some flora that I’d never seen before
Top one pink-flowered native iceplant ( Disphyma australe )
Bottom one I think is native bachelor's buttons, possibly Cotula coronopifolia although there are many cotulas. :-)

Wow, are they real?
If you mean the pics above yours - only the top ones are real - the others are store window display.
That's a very delicately lit fern curl too : )
-
Jos,
I like the store ones Nora, and glad you guys like my gentle curl.
I just treated myself to a $150 50mm 1.8 canon lens and it is sharp as a pin and a pleasure to use. I had a short cheap extension tube on for this shot to get a bit closer. -
This thread is 100% pure bloody brilliance.
Carry on.
