  • Chris Waugh, in reply to David Hood,

You, sir, are making me wish I was living back in North East Valley or Opoho and could walk through the gardens almost every day again.

    Great photos, in other words.

At about 20m, this looks like a closeup. Been playing with my Christmas present, a decent tripod.

    More summer reds...

    1. First of my summer reds.
    2. The Victory Garden after 2 weeks of committed neglect.
    3. Surprised at the extent to which this lettuce patch is putting out, considering that it was a plant-and-forget

Still got two beds to fill, building up the soil slowly. This garden is 100% organic, by which I mean nothing was brought to the site beyond seedlings, and the cardboard boxes that I put on the grass beneath to start it off. No herb or pesticide ever used. Indeed, none used on the section for around 7 years. Generally I don't water it, except during the seedling phase if the ground looks really dry. The fertilizer is all "worm-wees", the liquid run-off from the worm farm. The solid is finally making it into the last beds, which will probably be prolific.

I made the beds themselves from about $50 worth of wood I got off TradeMe. There are 8 in total.

The back fence line, an apparently unmowed jungle, produced a couple of dozen delicious strawberries. No photos, sorry, I was too greedy and ate them on the spot. They were sweeter by far than anything I've managed to procure during the Christmas season.

I'm trying artichokes. No idea when they're ready, or what to do with them. I could have cleared Mr Spider for a better shot, but I presume he pitched his tent there for a reason. I'll call it pest control, for the moment, although this garden seems totally free from pests. Maybe all the companion planting worked.

  • Jos, in reply to Nora Leggs,

I grew corn last year, took up a lot of space in my small garden, and I only got one cob per plant, Ive got a great row of beans and a small crop of potatoes in the same spot this year.

The wonder of the blog is that I can search back and find what I did in prvious years, most handy. :)
