  • BenWilson, in reply to Josie McNaught,

The photo from the Netherlands reminded me – hardly anyone LOCKS their bike there

Really? They did in Amsterdam, but that could be an exception. I had a bike that had quite a cool feature, a built in rear-wheel lock there. Never seen it since.

Sure, anyone could pick it up and put it in a van, but it isn’t that great a bike to start with.

My thinking too. I don't even have a disk brake to lock. I'm sure I'd feel differently if my bike cost heaps, but it didn't.

Oh, bike parking! Slim pickings at best in central Auckland.

This is what you get at the Countdown Quay Street in the CBD. Someone who probably doesn't ride bikes managed to install it incorrectly and too close together. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Other places with dishwasher rack parking: Westfields Downtown (in front of Dick Smith's), New World Vic Park.

There is still nothing along High or Lorne Streets but hopefully that will change when they get converted into shared spaces.

Nothing along Carlton Gore Road in Newmarket, despite the new separated cycleways. I spent a good ten minutes trying to figure out what to do in front of the Mind Lab. (Tip: use their carpark on the other side of the building.)

Auckland could do well with the Cycle Hoops that WCC has been installing in various places around their CBD. It's a quick win using existing infrastructure.

Wellington also seem to have more Bikerakks which could be a nice public-private solution.

Bike racks needn't be ugly. Its the small things that matter...

Very casual parking in front of an Amsterdam supermarket. There are racks across the road too.

Toaster racks (my preferred choice!) and cycle hire in the same area in London.

How they roll in Copenhagen. Note the rather generous spacing given between bicycles, presumably to accomodate cargo bikes too?

Bertrand Russell extolled the bike’s simplicity

    Which would make it Russelling!
(Except that sounds like nicking someone else’s bike.)

  • Steve Barnes, in reply to Jolisa,

if you build it, you might have to double it sooner than you expected, because they will come… in droves!

I wonder whether that is why the powers that be drag their collective feet over public transport but that is a different matter, they seem to ignore that progression of events when it comes to building roads though.
Providing infrastructure for cycling should be a no brainer, it is the cyclists that supply the rolling stock as it is with roads. This is the main reason for holding back on rail I imagine.

  • BenWilson,

I secretly love it when people lock bikes to the poles that hold the “No Parking” signs!

Pleased to be of service! It's a pretty likely choice for me, since I often chose the bike because I couldn't park a car nearby.

I go extra distance to avoid the entire area.

I'm usually on the Northwestern Cycleway nearby. But Russell's problem is that he actually lives right by there - that stretch is on his route to the cycleway. At least on the footpath you probably won't get run over.

the odd terrifying Elephant and Castle roundabout.

That, my friend, sends shivers of panic up my spine even to this day, that and Hyde Park Corner and marble Arch.

Munich. This seems to be a more ad-hoc and unofficial parking but due generous space given to footpath in front of the underground metro, it seems like no big deal.

Note the amount of space allocated for cars (this is the home of BMW, Mercedes and VW) and yet you can still have a seperated cycleway.

"But they were receptive when I told them I’d get them the information about requesting a publicly-funded stand, and I didn’t get around to it. So that’s on me."

Yes, I'm trying to broker one for Matt at (GD) via Kathryn (AT), at a popular establishment in Ponsonby you're familiar with. He has been crying out for a permanent stand for the bikes that crowd the two lampposts outside. If only they'd been able to leave the loaners there from the Greater Auckland launch (below). Admittedly I haven't been giving Kathryn the reminders that I should have been so that is also on me.

This is also an extremely opportune time to perhaps remove a parking space and put in a row of bike parks... I know Kathryn had some beautiful concept ideas for bike parking and it would be great to see one there.

I’ve been in Cambridge UK for the past 6 weeks and have been looking at lots of bike stuff, but parking at supermarkets in particular, since the manager of Te Atatu Peninsula Countdown has been entirely resistant to any discussions about improving bike parking there.
This first image is outside the city centre Sainsbury’s. 60 spaces and all taken, all the time (admittedly not solely used by Sainsbury’s customers, but since you can’t drive down the streets surrounding it, everyone will be quaxing in some way).
The second images is outside a large city-fringe Tesco. There’s also a huge car park attached to this.
The third image is outside a large Waitrose in a village just south of Cambridge. its large carpark is full of Remuera tractors, but the bike parking was more extensive than you can see here and well used.

Also - while we're geeking out over quaxer parking - I took this shot outside the whole foods market in Portland. Because while on holiday I spent a portion of my time taking photos of stationery bicycles chained to metal tubes. This parking was full or fuller all the time, even after midnight when I took the picture.
Perhaps Countdown needs to see this in action in a different country. Imagine not saving all that ground for more resting cars, but instead having more shop, with more stuff, for more buying?

You mean this style of wheel lock? We have them at Rode; I think they are brilliant and you can also plug in a cable to run around a post for extra security.

Also they had this temporary parking outside the music festival in Portland, it was easily constructed and held lots of bikes in a smaller space. Looked pretty cheap too (and I mean in a good way).

For relevance to the post: This could be used outside a supermarket or a butchers, or even a pub. The vertical storage makes it economical on space in a confined environment like a footpath. And comparatively easy to relocate, store and assemble.

  • Su Yin Khoo, in reply to JessicaRose,

I'm not a fan of these or any ones that require me to lift up my quaxing bike (and Auckland Council has used them before for Bike Breakfasts) but agree that they can be a quick win and convenient for temporary events.
