I'm glad I had Felicity Tuohy and Michael Murphy's Down Under the Plum Trees to guide me in my teenage years. This NZ written and researched "resource on sex and social development" featured dozens of candid interviews with teenagers and others on every taboo subject known to the SPCS circa 1976, when this manual was published.

I remember that book - I recall being mildly hypochondrialised by the VD section. Ironic given my utter lack of any opportunity to contract one.

Being as I'm actually in Auckers next Thursday, I might well pop along. Given that my other choice is The Feelers (and Minuit, to be fair) at the Cloud I'm only torn because it includes copious free beer paid for by Microsoft (they SO owe me!).

Ha, Patricia Bartlett! I remember my mum saying she'd sent PB her books in the hope she'd call for them to be banned, because it would be good publicity. No such luck... I don't know if that meant PB thought they were too tame, couldn't be bothered (i.e. was picking her battles), or just didn't read them.

Now you mention it, yes. Radio NZ will be recording them for broadcast. It's possible they might baulk at the stronger parts, though :-)

They just make eye candy, nothing more. Flash in the pans, selling their product. Its the trivialization of society driven by nobheads with too much influence thats more the worry. Well for me anyway

Roger Horrick's Len Lye performance opens that night too, Too much choice!The Big Screen Symposium in Auckland at the weekend was great--nicely rounded off with 'conversations' with Sam Neill (who was very witty) and Australian director Gillian Armstrong.

I do remember a fair bit casual nudity at BBQs from when I was very young (in the early 80s). I can't imagine any female of my generation going topless at a social event, nor a man wearing little undies type shorts away from a serious amount of water. It's pretty unusual to see a top less man even. Why have we become so fearful of our own nudity?

Immersion in our cultural moment has created a sort of sexuality fatigue, a sense that what was once evocative is now either an empty cliche or a frightening political battleground.
I think people resent being so overtly manipulated by writers with axes to grind and advertisers with products to sell. When I see billboards thrusting oversized vaginas at bored passers-by I sometimes wonder whether something has been lost. Scarcely a week passes where the Guardian - the Guardian - does not publish some carelessly expressed flamebait on some aspect of gender or sex.
You have to hope it is a juvenile, angst-ridden phase we will all some day grow out of.

I think we're not afraid of nudity so much as embarrassed about not having perfect bodies. People who are super buff have no shame, so far as I can see. You wouldn't bother with all the trouble of buffing to then not let everyone see.
