Heh. Similar language reminds me. I heard a Lyttelton Tunnel story the other day. (Would love to get confirmation it happened BTW). A bloke was driving very sedately at the speed limit through the tunnel with a cop right behind. The tunnel and road started shaking in a quake (which one?). The guy in the car hummed and harred (spelling?) about what to do. Just then, over the loud hailer from the car behind came: "Put your bloody foot down and lets get the f*^k outta here!!". They did.

Intersting. I've only ever heard people using "hoha" exactly as it is. "Half-pai" on the other hand does tend to get wirtten as "half-pie" by those who don't know its derivation.

If you do wind up with a house in the dead zone (where presumably services aren't going to be fixed), would the council prevent you from putting in a septic-tank system? If properly installed, they work well, in my experience.

I doubt they'd be keen on in-ground septic tanks in an unstable quake zone. And it doesn't address the other infrastructure/services like drainage or roading.

Are there schools currently located in the red zone? If so what will happen to their pupils? Will school zones etc need to be redrawn?

Green, phew. I really feel for the Haywood household. I'm glad not to be the one bearing the handcuffs. In some ways though it might be better to be red or green, and have some certainty, than be in the limbo of the orange zone.

Many of the schools which draw students from these areas already face real problems and are operating at alternative sites because of the damage to their facilities. This is another challenge that we will have to work through with the Ministry of Education and the schools.At the moment no schools are being closed. Decisions on the future of schools will be made in due course as the longer-term schooling needs of Christchurch become clear

Only one I can think of that's completely in a red zone is St Paul's Catholic Primary school in Dallington. Avonside Girls' is sandwiched between a green area & an orange/red, Shirley Boys' & Banks Ave have significant red areas within their zones. Any changes to zones will probably be negotiated between the schools & the Ministry once things have calmed down & the schools have a better idea of where their pupil catchments are.

Well. It looks like it is happening. But I keep getting the Rawhide theme song trolling in my head. The quakes "Rolling rolling rolling". Visions of Gun Slinger Gerry and Sidekick John cutting them out, ride 'em in, move 'em on, Headn' 'em up. Rope 'em, throw 'em brand 'em. Soon you'all be living high and wide.
Rawhide Theme. Although Jake and Elwood's version was visually more exciting.
Someone just told me that Bexley used to be the tip as well as a swamp.......what f*&kwit council let that happen???? The scary bit was this comment off Stuff that implies it will get worse:

When I spoke to the principal of Avonside Girls (very briefly) she was all about the rebuilding and reopening. It seems the girls are all doing okay at Burnside but it's causing their parents a whole heap of transport headaches. My friend's girl goes there - they live one week at Waimairi Bch and one week at Westhaven, and it's a very long haul for her.

I remember there being quite a bit of talk at the time Bexley was developed, that it wasn't suitable for housing because the soil was swampy. I wonder if that area would have fared better if it had had the vibro-rolling and special drainage work that was done for Pegasus Town (which fared so well in the quakes).
