    CHRISTCHURCH EARTHQUAKE

    23 December 2011 - 2.30pm

Christchurch Police say initial reports following this afternoon's earthquake indicate no serious injuries or widespread damage at this stage.

Police are urging drivers to slow down. There is significant traffic on city streets - but not gridlocked at this stage - and Police appeal for drivers to be patient and take care.

All available Police units have been mobilised across the city to provide reassurance and check on safety and damage.

    • Scarborough rockface has suffered some collapse but this has been contained by the containers at the foot of the cliff.
    • Lyttelton tunnel is open
    • Airport has been evacuated
    • All major shopping malls have been evacuated and closed
    • 1 person is reported to have been injured at Eastgate Mall and has been taken to hospital.

  • Emma Hart,

Jesus. I had no web access when this happened. Family were flying up to join me today. They made it out by about ten minutes. Kind of comforting to know I'm not the only one having a wee breakdown.

  • Russell Brown,

Emma Hart is in Wellington. Karl and the kids took off from Christchurch airport today in the nick of time to join her. Phew.

Hugs, Emma. We've had a helluva fright but I suspect the damage isn't going to be too significant. Not on the scale of June, anyhow.

  • Hamboy,

I was in Farmers at the Palms mall when it happened. It's a lot more frightening that being at home or work. People were crying and panicking, which always seems to make it worse.
I was lucky one of the shop assistants lead us out and my car was parked in a spot that was close to an exit.
I saw some liquafication in Shirley and St Albans when I was driving home, but no where near as back as the previous quakes.

    Press Release: Christchurch City Council

    3pm Friday 23 December 2011

The Christchurch City Council is establishing an Emergency Operations Centre in the city, following this afternoon’s 5.8 earthquake. The quake is believed to have resulted in:

    • Rock fall behind containers at Scarborough
    • Some liquefaction reported at Parklands

Police are doing aerial reconnaissance to check for damage across the city.

All Council buildings will be closed, until they can be assessed as safe to occupy. People should assume all Council buildings are closed until they can be assessed and declared safe.

There are reports of a power supply outage at New Brighton , though this is not believed to cover a large area.

The Council is still assessing whether water or waste services have been affected.

  • Robyn Gallagher,

Ugh. What a horrible experience - my thoughts are not just with the people of Christchurch, but all those from out-of-town visiting family for Christmas. I really hope that things aren't too munted, and that everyone can have as much of a good Christmas as possible.

  • Tuo Lei,

All fine out here in Bishopdale, forgotten how much I hate that noise of multiple burglar/car alarms going off. The second one might be bigger/closer than the first one.

  • Rob Stowell,

    Felt rockier, but shorter, eh?
Geonet seems frozen on the 5.8 so no confirmation. Lots of little aftershocks.
I can see some people out fishing in the harbour, half a k or so away. They've been there for a few hours- bet they haven't felt a thing :)

OK I'm off to the Opawa-St Martins Twilight Market for fruit, veg, and tasty treats. It's apparently still on. 4-7 at Helios, Fifield Tce.

Strange days Russell, I came in to see if people were OK. Looks like fate has shaken out more than I’d expected. Really appreciate your kind words and effort there. Will try to post something sensible on that topic.

Now, is Ian D. OK? Ian?
