  • Amberleigh Jack,

As a new word of the year player, can two words be a word?
If so I nominate "nasty woman" and "bad hombre" as my picks!

Hiiii Amberleigh! I think Nasty Woman needs capitals. Excellent WOTY IMO. :-)

It means 'as fuck' as in 'very', for example 'drunk AF' = 'very drunk'

Ah, thanks! and here I was trying out other topical possibilities such as “active fault” or – having just watched the GNS presentations suggesting a higher-than-previously-estimated risk of failure within the next 10 years – “Alpine Fault”.
(Mind you, most statements about faults remain perfectly comprehensible on replacing one F-word with another, e.g. “…and when that fucker ruptures, you can kiss goodbye to Westport.”)

  • TracyMac,

I'm pretty entertained by the Aussie word (phrase) of the year: democracy sausage.

That is, from the sausage sizzle at the more evolved voting stations - the convention is to have your sausage AFTER you vote, I am given to understand.

It's a pretty recent term in Oz, although the sausage sizzles on election day have been around forever.

At least that's one cheerful association with elections on this side of the world, although thankfully the central Europeans seem to be doing ok in terms of not electing more so-called "populist" (dog-whistling) right-wing "personalities".

On a closer to home front (and even more of a tangent), from reading the Herald, you'd expect National to have sewn up Mt Roskill. Shock-horror, a Labour rep who is actually visible in the community got in by a landslide, and not on Goff's coattails. Very satisfying result.

Or as a friend recently tweeted to me AF = As Foretold, which is even better if you try it out. So sage, much AF, wow.

    Drumpf

As employed by many American liberals to mock Trump, in turn validating this common trend of changing names to avoid discrimination in an insular culture.

    Orange

Now something of a pejorative, despite the possibility of it being an unconscious effort to blur racial lines. Come Jan 20, in the White House, orange is the new black.

    pull someone’s ponytail

1.to make fun of someone; tease, humiliate, ridicule, harrass (sexually or otherwise), gaslight.
    2. to deceive someone; trick someone, lie, feign memory loss.

  • Dennis Frank,

I've noticed inequality featuring constantly in the media this year - and not just in this country. As in lots of people complaining about it (and nobody trying to eliminate it).

But if the criteria are replications of a meme & catchiness, then I'd bet on Brexit or Trump, with truthiness & post-truth deserving merit awards.

  • Amberleigh Jack,

Also, I forgot my explanation for Nasty Woman.
I may be imagining things but I don't really recall the gender divide being quite so publicly ... intense ... in other years as it has this year.
I think that one sums that up pretty well.

  • Russell Brown,

Hi folks. If a real zinger comes up after this time, I can add it in.

But I've culled down a longlist and sent it to Hadyn and we should be voting on it tomorrow morning.

  • John McCormick,

Too late for WOTY, and probably disqualified anyway for being two words, but since a superb post on PA earlier this year, mention of Trump usually triggers in me the memory of hoofwanking bunglecunt. This has been a source of great comfort in coping with the realisation that the world is much nastier and stupider than I thought.
