Who wins if (or should I say when) #dirtypolitics is the winner? Is it Giovanni for mentioning the term first (out of the many PA'ers who posted it) or Sacha for knocking a hashtag on the front and making it one word? That is the question...

Yeah, that's my take. It didn't really make sense to have multiple versions of the phrase, to I sett;ed on the hashtag one.

good list from popular usage, half of it could combine into a stream of consciousness mumble by dear leader in any interview.
And just to plug my also ran “FJK!”, this will feature via fabric paints on new T-shirts on the inevitable ‘rainy day at the bach’ in Jan.

I think it just has to be a big word or concept for 2014. Ebola's a good example - it's been around in the 70s but took off, I hate to say virally, following the outbreak this year in West Africa. What makes it a WOTY contender for me is that it's moved out of its original meaning and drifted into metaphor - there were a handful of examples of media commentators using it to mean something big and nasty, eg "it's the Ebola of politics".

My problem with Ebola is that it has killed only a few thousand this year. By contrast AIDS is killing 10s of thousands a year and nobody quite knows how many ISIS/ISIL has killed. For me there is a huge disconnect between the fear uncertainty and doubt spread around ebola and the actual damage it is doing.
But I guess that is sometimes the thing about words - sometimes they gather more momentum than you might expect.

Ebola hasn't touched New Zealanders in an immediate sense: it's still a story about "overseas" on the foreign segment of the news. Horror reactions for sure, especially in certain sectors, but not much more than horror, sympathy and move on for most.

By contrast.... many diseases, including 'flu. This ebola outbreak reminds me a lot of SARS - except that ebola isn't actually new and it is a lot more deadly than SARS. But still, the same panic, not because of the actual risk, but because it's so new and unknown. But in this case, "new" and "unknown" in that all previous outbreaks have been small and remote.

I was looking for "proactive relationship" – should've nominated it… I know. But surely it would be there amidst some of the nominations. I'm curious too as to what the opposite would be – inactive relationship? no relationship?
