Look this Einstein = One Stone = Kotahipohatu(Iaked my mate Rangi for the real meaning, he's a good joker, told me straight) and we all know what that means, right? Right? More bloody handouts from Nanny State to useless brown (okay, not PC, hah! PC! but they all are eh? Especially the local
lot. Kai something or other.) And who pays for this? Us!
Hardworking downtoearth farmers. Just earning a crust and realising we are the backbone of the country and the place would be 3rd world and dead without us. I mean, what was it like before we arrived? Cannibals, that's what, cannibals everywhere. Besides we were here first. Everyone knows the Celts came here in 6000BC. You just read the real scientists, Doutre and that- that'll open your eyes to real science.

we did experiment 2 because we didn't know what the fuck to make of experiment 1 #overlyhonestmethods

We have done exactly that. To be fair we usually don't believe much until we've done it three or more times though. But definitely looked at the first expt and gone WTF!

  • Rich of Observationz,

There is also this method for conducting high school science experiments:
    - work out from the theory you've just been taught what the ideal result should be
    - fiddle with apparatus
    - calculate randomly distributed numbers about the ideal curve
    - plot on a graph
    - draw a line through it
    - hand in, with a paraphrase of the instructions
    - and you're done.

Beat me to it. You missed:
-Friction is always the reason that physics equipment does not work. It is never that the teacher didn't just throw the broken stuff away, or fix it.
-Write your hypothesis in pencil, if you are fool enough to make it before the experiment.

    ETA:
"Human Error" is an importantly cowardly way of not blaming anyone in particular for it all not working.
In chemistry, you must always spill some of it on the documentation.

I cannot possibly be the only VUW Chem alum having a compulsive flashback to the monologue that begins "When I Was At Oxford We Were Issued A Silk Handkerchief On The First Day...", can I?

  • 81stcolumn,

Perhaps another tag should be #missing thesis chapter - After two and a half years we abandoned a large body of data due to a critical methodological flaw. This data will not appear in the thesis. Instead we reproduced an effect in the lab that we found by chance. We verified it and found it was quite robust, unfortunately after another two years and two more supervisors we are still unable to explain adequately why we get this result. Consequently, we are making something up and moving on to more trivial research in order to get the job done before the thesis registration expires......

Thesis started in 1993 candidate graduated in........
