  • Hadyn Green,

Unless something flippin' interesting happens in the final and then we might do a postmortem

  • Hadyn Green,

And also there needs to be some discussion around the current fine-line between the All Blacks marketing machine and the MSM. Both the way that the media would report anything that Adidas or Heineken* might tell them about but also how they would "invent" stories and issues. Remember the locking crisis anyone?

*(I just discovered Heineken is in my Firefox spell-checker)

  • Robyn Gallagher,

Hey, thanks, Dropkicks lads and Russell for Some Foreign Field.

It was good, and it gave me an in to the world of rugby. I'd never ever cared before, but the world of non-muntery rugby comment and culture was something I could get into.

I'm not sure how it happened, but after the All Blacks loss I wrote some stuff on my blog that seemed to strike the right chord with rugby fans.

And we saw the formation of the Public Addreess System Women's First XV, a mighty and awesome force to behold!

  • Hadyn Green,

Y'all know we'll still be going over on our blog eh?
Heck it's only just over 4 months until the Super 14 (blech!), the non-muntery will continue

  • Richard Llewellyn,

Yeah, thanks Guys, you provided a valuable rugby-tragic community service. Sort of a cathartic 'Dear Abby' for those who took more than a few days to get the angst out of their system (I think I'm over it now, albeit with the the very occasional did-that-really-happen? moment.)

    C'mon Wellington.

Yeah, great work Dropkicks. My fav bit of the podcasts are when, after you all booo the DOTW, someone goes 'wanker', or 'dick' or the like under their breath. That bit's class.

What are you all going to pod about over summer?

What we always podcast about...sport and crap.

  • Jonty,

I don't know about over-invested in rugby culture, but I'll bet if it had been rugby and not soccer that Fijian goalie wouldn't have been banned!

Yes. I was disappointed that the Fiji 7s team was allowed to play here last year. The distinction apparently, that the 7s was an 'international event'. Surely bans have more effect at international events, simply because they're bigger events. It feels like we have principles until it actually gets important...

  • Thom James,

As an Englishman with very little interest in rugby, it has caused me a good deal of amusement to watch New Zealand search the very depths of its soul over the last two weeks as it attempts to come to terms with the unthinkable. I thought to myself, "How sad, that a nation should emotionally invest so heavily in a sport they arrogantly believe to be their divine right to be the best in, only for it all to come crashing down around their ears." Pure hubris.

And then of course, my laughable excuse for a football team (soccer if you must) goes and royally fucks its chances of qualification for Euro 2008, and I'm left with little choice but to empathise, and backtrack on all the grief I've given to my friends in the last fortnight.

And for the record, if we do win the final, it just goes to show rotten to the core rugby is as a sport, when the game's ugliest exponents can triumph despite their dearth of talent or imagination. Ah well, at least there's always the league. Oh, wait...

  • Danielle,

As The Main Ingredient so accurately sang, some years ago: 'Everybody plays the fool sometime/there's no exception to the rule'.

(BTW, my husband, also not-truly-invested in rugby as an American, noted to me that he was really surprised by how much insecurity NZers have about how well we play rugby. So, depending on the nature of the observer, we're either totally arrogant dicks, or angst-ridden sad sacks freaking out about all our failings. Jury still out...)

Danielle: the paradox may be resolved by noting we usually only voice our doubts among ourselves, not in public among strangers. So observers within NZ will see us angsting, while observers overseas are more likely to infer arrogance. Unless they've been following the PA threads.

(where "we/us" = fellow supporters of any team, and "strangers" = "people of other or unknown team affiliation"; this isn't limited to All Black supporters, or Kiwis)

Argentina 34, France 10. Doesn't that put into perspective how crap our bunch of choking show ponies are.

  • Hadyn Green,

What it actually shows is how weird the French victory over New Zealand was. Right now all I want to see (other than the final) is a one off test between the All Blacks and this Argentinean team.

  • Yamis,

What it shows is that the two times France were going to score tries they were pulled back for forward passes.
