  • BenWilson,

3410, I tend to find water does a good job. It removes everything that is water soluble. Only oily substances seem not to be, which includes the natural oils we produce.

  • Danielle,

strip their bodies of natural oils on daily basis, for the purposes of social conformity

The hippies! The hippies are here! Run for your lives! ;)

(Also, try being a conventionally longer-haired woman and washing with nothing but water so your 'natural oils' don't get 'stripped', and see how many jobs you get after a series of stringy-rats-tailed interviews.)

The thing is, it's the shampoo that causes greasy hair. As it strips the oil from the hair, it encourages more to be produced, which requires another wash and so the vicious circle continues. Stopping, or cutting back on, shampoo apparently allows one's hair to get back to its natural balance in 3-6 weeks. Water's good, but I need something else once in a while.

I just hate that for two days after a shampoo wash I look like this.

Yeah, I read that too. And in my teens, I even tried the non-shampoo 'restoring your natural balance' thing. I have two things to say about that experiment: A) it does not work; and B) no one ever tells you about the itching. OH GOD THE ITCHING.

But it's ok if your'e stoned. It becomes easy to ignore. Y'know it would then be obvious you're a stoner cos you are then just dirty.
    @3410,
If you dye your hair, any bugs in the hair will die a painful death and cleanse the scalp at the same time. Use the conditioner with hair product and you'll be good to go with water alone for at least 6 weeks at which time a touch up will be timely for the next wash, thus allowing in between time, a chance for the natural oils to restore, and a jolly nice hair-do to boot. You'll feel so much younger !
Of course an alternative is the peat Coca Cola lakes up next to Tokerau Beach in the far North.

  • Just thinking,

Can I suggest Olive oil or Hemp oil as the Hydrocarbon chain for your soap molecule?

The evil Babylon invented soap around 5000years ago, evil Babylon.

Making your own soap use [sic] fat & caustic soda

Yes, I've seen such soap described as "organic".

This despite the fact that much production of NaOH still uses the mercury cell process, which is one of the main causes of environmental mercury pollution. It would in theory be possible to source NaOH that's guaranteed to have come from a more modern (diaphragm/membrance cell) plant, but you can bet the kind of hippies that make organic soap would have no clue about this.

  • Islander,

Old days here, never used soap as such - kumarahou ( a leafy plant) was used for hair and underarm/genital hair etc IF you wished them to smell of not much else- otherwise it was a lot of swimming, use of fat (expecially bird), charcoal, and red ochre (the latter protected against insect ravages).

Here's Hemp for Victory, 1942. They even talk about planting in places not easy to access & check out the certificate.

Of course flax is really the best option for NZ as we move out of the carbon economy, we are doing that?

I was mostly meaning soap on my body. Shampoo tends to go on me after using it, and that's my main issue with it. I don't get itchy hair , although the scalp can definitely get dry - I have far less dandruff than when I used to shampoo.

I'm sure washing long hair is a chore. Although it seems from the outside that it's not the washing that's the problem, it's the drying, brushing and combing afterward. Conditioner helps?

  • Steve Barnes,

Back on topic Here is an interesting article.

So-called "skunk" does contain higher than normal concentrations of the main psychoactive compound, a molecule called delta-9-tetrahydrocannabinol (THC). What is less well known is that another constituent, cannabidiol (CBD), has been eliminated from skunk through selective breeding to increase the THC content.

The elimination of CBD may play a key role in the development of psychosis. Laboratory studies have shown that pure, synthetic THC causes transient psychosis in 40 to 50 per cent of healthy people. In stark contrast to THC, CBD appears to have an anti-psychotic effect, at least in animals. Studies in humans, though few in number, have produced similar findings.

Which takes us around full circle. We should be able to include a pot plant outside with all the other pot plants!!
