then there was Glenn Turner as a one day opener when he came back - he could play a lovely chip over the inner ring. ooo, matron.
but I'm most frustrated by the string of early retirements, guys like Astle and Fleming should still be playing. Poss down to Bracewell, poss down to lack of tests, poss just bored with losing.
even so, best time I've had watching us bat was at Eden Park when Chatfield got Smith thru to his ton. stirring in a comic fashion.
and what's happened to Tuffey? Never seemed to play to his size, but got nice high bounce.

A favourite story about another of NZ's portly dashers, Richard Reid (1989-91). Picked as a slogger, opening with Martin Crowe, in his first overseas ODI at Sydney he was found out by Alderman and Bruce Reid, scoring 17 in an hour.
After a couple of overs of playing and missing he wandered down to Crowe and said nonchalantly, "These guys are quite good, eh?" and wandered back to miss a few more.

So Bracewell did better than 8th. Good luck to Moles he only has to do better than 5th :).
The new coach Moles has a bit of rebuilding to do with regard to ODIs. On the test front though, the only was is up – we'll be 8th on the test table by the end of this series.

That's not unusual in pro sports. Standard practice for anything these guys write to get put in front of the PR guy first, they probably just didn't know about this blog.

I suspect it'd probably be a coach that'd be as concerned as the PR guy that is causing the issues at the moment.
Some of that honesty would no doubt be useful to current and future Black Caps opposition. That's what makes it interesting.

As a footnote, Ian O'Brien is still blogging (daily during this test, not sure if his content has changed at all), his blog has moved into officialdom, and he's getting a link from the front page of cricinfo.com. Probably increasing his traffic 10-fold.
