  • Danielle, in reply to Martin Lindberg,

No! No, I do not have the Swedish version!

(Dear Bart: please do not make me stabby by putting "feminists" in scare quotes and telling us we have to concentrate on what you consider to be more important, because I was feeling very happy about the prospect of a Swedish version of that song. KTHXBAI.)

(My favourite being: "oh mickey ¿cómo estás? ¿cómo estás? me gustas más hey mickey!")

You clearly haven't listened to Bowie's "Ragazzo solo, ragazza sola". His Italian diction is even worse than Lesley Gore's, which is saying something.

(Then again, in those days we had Italian singers putting on a fake anglo accent when they performed, so we did it to ourselves.)

  • Sacha, in reply to Russell Brown,

Also, Amanda Palmer totally put her foot on my chair and dominated me this evening. And sang. Man, she has a voice.

Sharing the love - her performance from the cosy Webstock speakers' dinner (captured by Kristina Halvorson):

I am confused and late to the show but people saying they've been feminists longer so they know better?

Better, feminism is only about things that traditionally men have rated as important - you know, politics, economics, none of that girly "lifestyle" stuff that actually fills more of most people's lives.

Sorry Danielle didn’t mean it come out that way, was just reacting to all the “your not the right kind of feminist” shit and the “you’re not a proper feminist because you worry about looking nice”.

Sorry got grumpied early and probably should have edited. If I buy you a pony will that make up for it?

  • Deborah,

Um…. Bart… best not to tell people how they should be doing their feminism. We each work on what we can. I’m not in there setting boards of directors to rights because I happen to spend most of my time child rearing (raising three gorgeous young feminists) and earning a coin to feed them. A few years back I heard a wealthy white man telling some Maori women that they shouldn’t be worrying about Te Tiriti because global warming was the biggest problem we were facing and that’s what they should be working on. Marginalising Minorities 101, delivered by a man who had flown in from overseas in a jet plane.

Good point that it’s a huge issue, ’though, and that as usual, it’s the activities engaged in by the less powerful that get cut first.

ETA: Oops, sorry, just saw your response to Danielle, Bart.

Well, what started me on this whole thing were the Beatles' German singles, so I challenge you to find shittier diction than theirs (and I don't even *speak* German).

It’s also Derailing for Dummies 101: Why aren’t you talking about real issues? (Also, Chris Trotter is rather of dealing these related cards out to uppity bourgeois “identity politics” obsessed feminists: your false consciousness is showing and stop bitching, you’re not really marginalised at all.)

And you know what, I don't call myself a feminist - partly because the endless definitional stoushes a waste of time and energy.

Not treating women like shit - and being mindful of how I perpetuate and exploit my own privilege, and not just that which comes from my penis - is how I do my non-doucheist humanism. OK?

Yeah sorry that wasn't the intent at all. Must not write fast when grumpy.

Every bit helps. And it seems to me that people will be er feminist (see no quotes Danielle) about some things in their lives and not feminist about others (for whatever value of feminist you apply). Underneath all that is a fairly common goal of getting to a society that is fair to all, and we are not there yet and I don't believe my examples are in any way the worst out there.

Attacking other feminists because they don't match one persons view of what one should be doesn't actually help anyone. I'd prefer that energy be spent elsewhere and for me that would be cleaning up our state owned companies but other efforts are fine too - just stop attacking each other will you (note how I excluded myself from that as if I might be guilt free - not).

    OK! +1

[ETA] See, Danielle, that's why I don't like labels, to answer your question from some time ago. Everyone has their own perception of what the labels mean and they take their perceptions as shorthand for who the people are and what they think (you know, like "copyright reformers" just want everything to be free </tui>). I'd rather people talked and listened to the arguments being made, and judged them on their merits, but every one is so suspicious of others' agenda that they spend their time deconstructing the arguer instead of the argument.

  • giovanni tiso,

Meanwhile, for those who might still be interested in the claims that Emma makes in her post, here's an opinion piece by Tracy Barnett about the win a hot wife competition in which, amidst some general sanity, the author manages a couple of jabs at women who wear revealing clothing and are therefore complicit with sexism.

  • Tamsin6, in reply to Jacqui Dunn,

I think you replied to Jackie not me, right? I didn't actually say what you've quoted.

Whoops - sorry Jacqui, I typed Jacqui, but meant Jackie, hopefully context cleared it up mostly!

Have missed most of subsequent discussion as I've been felled by horrendous throat infection - but I find it hard to keep up with things on here anyway. Partly it's the time difference. Partly it is my inability to keep names straight (sorry again, I hate it when people get my name wrong too).

We never use “slut” to describe a man or even have an equivalent.

Oh, fucking hell Tracy – does the New Zealand Herald employ any gay men who’ll take you on a field trip to K Road tonight? “Man-ho” is neither a fox hunting rally or one of the jewels of Flying Nun's discography.
