  • Alec Morgan,

Yeah, as first port of call for foot traffic, Kingsland and Valley Rd/Dominon Rd proprietors are probably simultaneously bricking themselves and gleefully anticipating jingle tills.
    Good luck to ’em.

  • Just thinking,

Lancaster Park has had those horns - vevuzalas for the Crusaders for years. They're just not as popular as they are in South Africa, and now they've banned them.
Me thinks they just rationalised product lines.

I never thought Andy would quit. The real question is why he was back on TV. It was Deakers show wasn't it, nuf said.

  • Sacha,

Lindsay Perigo speaks for the downtrodden and oppressed old white men of New Zealand, calling Haden's neanderthal utterances "courageous". Oooh yes, them disgruntled wimmins have teeth you know.

"It is to be hoped Sky TV will not now lose its nerve as it did over the Murray Mexted affair, and will keep Andy Haden on as a fearless and robust commentator in a nation sadly lacking in fearless commentary in all fields," Perigo concludes.

Also features the text of Haden's final bleat which sets new standards for non-apology (even surpassing efforts by politicians). Hopefully someone can show him what a "beat-up" actually feels like.

McCully is confirmed as a cringing ninny who can't even fire someone before they have a chance to throw their toys out of the cot on their own terms. Immature, fearful and unprincipled yesterday's men, the lot of them. Not the public face we deserve to show the world or each other.

  • Sofie Bribiesca,

I've maintained all along that a common sense appreciation of human behaviour should tell you Kingsland is where the crowds will surge after the game. It's right freakin next door to Eden Park for God's sake!

Yep, many of us have said that, (whilst quietly making plans to rent out our houses and move north for a holiday ) ;)

pedestrian access to the Bond Street overbridge

This all makes sense until you have 20,000 merry supporters leaning over the rails above the motorway. Apart from what they would hurl on to traffic, I'd have some concerns for their, and others', safety.

Mind you we have to be careful of cotton-wool rugby supporter syndrome, so as you were.

I do seriously hope someone with some gumption takes control, as the embarrassment of the RWC preparations in Auckland is becoming decidedly un-funny. Actually they couldn't organise a cake stall at a school fair. And I hate all the mileage for meat-heads this is getting. Shhh! Just ShhhTFU!

Interesting given that Hayden would be one of those old skool Dad's that wouldn't give a fag like Perigo the time of the day. Adherence to the 'I may disagree with what you say but I'll fight for your right to say it' principle still has mileage I see.

It may be because Haden hasn't covered the gays yet. Give him a couple of weeks, he's just working through the rolodex of bigotry.

  • Steve Barnes,

Does anyone else get the impression that the WRC could be the downfall of this pathetic Govt.? With all the shoving around Auckland has received over the Supershitty, not to mention the debacle of ECan, the ongoing embarrassing antics of McCully and Haden and now the dancing naked nubiles at the pre-match fund-raiser at Eden Park (a place where participants can "drink as heavily as possible".) on Thursday, however "tastefully done" and after, more binge drinking in Kingsland , god they were revolting.
    A Herald Poll in today's edition, under the Heading "Do you back the All Blacks?" reveals a startling result;
    Absolutely - never miss a game (28%)
    Yes - I support them (34%)
    Don't care (26%)
    No - I hate rugby (12%)
Putting the "Don't cares" with the "I hate Rugbys" gives a surprising 38%. Woe betide any Government that ignores such a poll.

It's more the deeply masochistic character of Randians, I think.

They have a victim complex to sustain in the face of contrary evidence. Must be exhausting - though easier if you slag actual disadvantaged groups, I guess.

  • Sacha,

Recordari, the Bond St overbridge is part of the anointed walking route that is meant to take a large chunk of fans on foot from the waterfront, up Queen St, along K Road and Gt North Rd to the game. Imagine the watering holes en route. I suspect they may need to install temporary high barriers on the bridge to prevent the catastrophe you imagine.

I think the problem with reyling on Kingsland or Dominion Rd villages for pre/post-match entertainment are (other than being way too small) their isolation from concentrations of hospitality and accommodation venues and from transport interchanges.

The randy Randian. Has a certain ring to it.

I can imagine them, but I sure wouldn't fancy being in one.

    What party?

though Kerre should be careful about her
    "old codger" comments...
    she's only 4 years younger (born 1965)
    than John Key (born 1961)
admittedly McCully was born in 1953...

...and I hadn't realised this Party Central was for after match festivities, I'd thought it was for those who can't go to the match so they can watch in a safe community-oriented environment, silly me...

" ...and will keep Andy Haden on as a fearless and robust commentator in a nation sadly lacking in fearless commentary in all fields,"

since when did fearless mean brainless?

  • Islander,

And, apropos Ian's last comment, when did 'fearless' equal trampling on other people's rights & feelings? Or 'robust' mean uninsightful selfish 'bloke' talk?

'bloke' in quotes because I think that was what Haden was aiming at -'me mates will understand, they're good blokes.'

Most of the blokes in my whanau went 'shudder & shuddup you nong.'

  • Kyle Matthews,

Haden resigned without ever hearing a word from McCully*, if that is true it is a fairly damning insight to how useless and ineffective McCully really is - John Quiche must be so looking forward to coming
    home to this lot...

I heard on the news that Haden had his phone off and was basically in hiding from the rest of the world.

Bar going up there and kicking down his door, what's a minister to do? He can either wait or he can fire him without talking to him, which he probably didn't want to do, as they want to try and get their story straight.

The beauty of it is, a crowd watching at Nixon Park/ Kingsland could probably hear, and be heard, by the people inside Eden Park, which would really add to the atmosphere.

Given the traffic problems of moving 60K people from inside Eden Park away from the residential area, I'm not sure you want to add another 30K or so people partying outside.

And I'm not sure the local residents want a party involving about 100 thousand people just along from their house.

Rubbish. TV news had audio clips of several phone calls to Haden's place during the period in question.
