  • Kyle Matthews,

I thought it was generally accepted that Levin is the most boring place in New Zealand. Has Clive eclipsed it?

Levin has a good playground, good swimming pool (including hydroslide), and at least one good cafe (the name escapes me). Obviously I travel with children almost all the time.

New Zealand has done way worse.

oh and it must be very nice to be a woman with an A-Cup and be told you no longer look like a women. slightly more degrading than the pictures id say

Tristan: I guess you didn't get the memo -- a woman's worth resides in her tits and her uterus. Otherwise...

And okay, so breast size is only one indicator used to judge 'apparent age'.

What about non-jailbait twinks (LINK SFW) with small cocks and shaved pubes? I'm asking on behalf of... um, a friend.

  • chris,

I agree with Isabel. In answer to your question Emma, I'd have to say, never. It should never be illegal for an 'adult' to look at a picture of something it is legal to do.

Under what circumstances should it be illegal to look at a picture of something it is legal to do?

Ooh, I've got one: voting. I don't want any photos circulating of what I did in the ballot booth..

  • Russell Brown,

Note that in Australia, they're still trying to figure out if this includes female ejaculation :))

I have been told our own censors are obliged to spend a lot of time trying to decide whether they're looking at female ejaculation (okay) or urination (probably not okay). I'm also told the time spent thus is a source of considerable frustration to them.

Real question worth pondering is why is one ok and the other not? is it something related to the chemical content?

The problem is where the picture is of something legal that is pretending very hard to be something illegal. However, as previously mentioned there is a huuuuuuge double standard when it comes to sex as opposed to other illegalities. I was about to say when it comes to children, but then I thought again:
If depicting recreations of illegal acts was itself illegal, then the entire CSI genre would be on shaky ground, to say nothing of Quentin Tarantino. And I know I've seen various recreations of crimes against children - kidnappings and worse on such as Criminal Intent and SVU.

So its not a case of "won't someone think of the children" its all about the sick perverseness that is sex.

It comes down to whether viewing depictions of an act can reasonably be expected to encourage a significant number of people who otherwise would not, to engage in that act. So far it seems widely accepted that seeing pix of anything sexual will incite any number of perverts to carry out their hidden deviant desires - while watching any number of murders and violent acts on TV, film and video game has no discernable effect.

Yeah, and I find this very shaky ground. Consider: watching lolicon/shotacon (link SFW) will turn you into a paedophile. Now consider: watching gay porn will turn you gay.

It should be noted at this point that I'm not recommending you try this experiment, because lolicon is illegal in New Zealand.

Yeah, and I find this very shaky ground. Consider: watching lolicon/shotacon (link SFW) will turn you into a paedophile. Now consider: watching gay porn will turn you gay.

But that's not (quite) what they're saying - the line is that people who already have pedophilic tendancies and view the porn get their tendancies reinforced and normalised and hence can be encouraged to try their fantasies in real life.

Compare "watching gay porn makes you gay" with "watching gay porn can encourage closeted gay people to express their sexuality"

I still say there needs to be a ton more research before I buy into that line, but it is a more reasonable statement.
As it stands, it is still a double standard that apparently watching Dexter won't encourage borderline serial killers to express their tendancies.

There's some disagreement coming through in the research, but the stuff mentioned in that lolicon article is interesting:

Milton Diamond and Ayako Uchiyama observe a strong correlation between the dramatic rise of pornographic material in Japan from the 1970s onwards and a dramatic decrease in reported sexual violence, including crimes by juveniles and assaults on children under 13. They cite similar findings in Denmark and West Germany. In their summary, they state that the concern that countries with widespread availability of sexually explicit material would suffer increased rates of sexual crimes was not validated

  • Emma Hart,

This is a research paper which seems to suggest that the same is true for the US. Note, though, that the concentration here is not on child pornography but adult pornography.

Personally, I'm not at all convinced that there's a causal link between porn and decreased sexual violence, but I am pretty convinced that the data indicates a lack of causal link between pornography and increased sexual violence.

this is what I imagine a lolicon to be.

That's really disturbing. Unicorns creep me out.
