JacksonI'd hate to be in your shoes . You have a hard task to choose any of this thread. So many beautiful birds.Whilst up North a friend gave me 5 books on NZ Native Birds to read. Fascinating information. I then had to give them back and now I know that I definitely want a bird book for Xmas. I am going to get the Tree one too. Good luck Jackson !

Not a native, and not a great photo, but I’m so chuffed to unexpectedly come face-to-face with one of these in my own garden! And it waited while I ran in for my camera, too. :-) Quite a fatty. Hoping my cat doesn’t see it.

In Canterbury (yes, largish area) and I remember it because the family member who called us all out to see the 5 birds (2 adults, 3 nearly-grown chicks) said, "You wont see these again." He knew his native birds...and the words were very strange to a 5 yr. old.
Buller's" Birds of NZ", and "Extinct Birds of NZ"(author/s/illustrator forgotten momentarily) have good pics. I'm away from home so cant direct you to pages et al. Weekend! -

Great pics Sofie & Lilith. With that distinctive headgear on the adults they have to be California quail. I remember a male hanging around some farmyard ducklings when I was a kid, as if he badly wanted to be involved. As rearing quail young is apparently a family affair I wondered if he was the survivor of some tragedy.

Righto then, the Bird of the Year has been decided. In case you missed it, it was… going to be announced at 6.30pm tonight. I guess on the news.
I’ll get my own decision out of the way early.
It was, as Sofie suggested, a difficult decision. So I wimped out and got my kids to make it for me.
1st prize: Gareth for the two Kea. Seems this stood out for all ages.
2nd prize: Hang on, there wasn’t supposed to be a second prize…
Oh well.2nd prize: Jeremy Gray for the penguin rescue (Miss 10 approves)
3rd prize: David Hood. (We picked the Kaka, but there were several possibilities)
First, as mentioned, is your choice of a print from Sam Clark’s collection of New Zealand birds. You can choose either A4 or A3.
2nd and 3rd will be a set of three cards by Sam, as described on his website.
If your emails are there, I’ll get in touch, or please send through delivery details in the reply to address.

Seeing NZ Quail in the 1950s would be takahe-rediscovery-level amazing, as they went extinct in Canterbury about 1875. But there aren't many other candidates apart from California Quail: Australian brown quail are only in the North Island, chukor are big, partridges I think were not introduced until later. So it's a puzzle.

Kia ora Mike - I didnt realise just what we'd seen - except they were koreke*- until many many years later. My 3 siblings of that time were then way too young to remember, and my cousin(Kai Tahu side) and my father, who was with us, are long dead.
It was an area of Canterbury that hadnt been burnt over (which is probably significant.) Pity portable cameras werent then generally available - but not even the 2 adults would've thought of them, then-*I absorbed Maori words better than any sponge does water - then-

Woot!
Here is a pair of photos that were taken through plants in a hurry, at a distance, with the camera on burst mode. They are rather cropped. They could as easily have gone in the Spring thread as they were taken in Sept 09.
