  • Gudrun Gisela,

David i love those fluffy ones. I too notices some on the pond in the botanic garden. As in my case i wanted a decent shot of the moon and got something else instead. It seems how life goes.

Last night, full moon and time to take this snap.

Snap indeed, that very same moon on that very same night.

    Prize flight!

Wait a minute, I promised prizes. To be announced with our next post!

The cats are out of the bag, but where are the prizes?

Never fear, I'll make something up on the fly...

But seriously, thank you all for the fantastic contributions to our Holiday blog, and it has been wonderful to see all the pictures coming in, in spite of what have not been the best conditions for holidays, or photography (see above).

In our low key (i.e. purrly planned) way, here are the winners for contributions to Roamin' Holiday.

Best all round contribution, image and text - Lilith__. Picking one photo, this one of the many will do.

Photo general - Gudrun Gisela with this beautiful shot.

Your prize, should you choose to accept it, is to pick a photo you particularly like which will be made into quality postcards or greeting cards by our blogging friend Ian Dalziel. Above photo shows some examples of his work.

I will send you an email with more details and how to go about claiming it.

    I'd also like to give a few honourable mentions to;

    - Russell Brown for some excellent shots on his iPhone.
    - Sofie B for the many wonderful shots, and giving me something to do over the holidays. ;-)
    - Jackie for the most recent Christchurch shots and general involvement.
    - Julie and ChrisW for giving it an international flavour.
... actually I better stop or I'll have to thank everyone.

I'll make you all a coffee, or something, at the earliest opportunity.

Cheers and don't stop the music!

Does that make Cypress Hill macro rappers?

More of a Country Joe & the Fish kind of ambience:

    Movin' past those pine-cone trees,
Sorry that I had to leave
High above on a twisted road
    Ocean movin' down below
I wonder just how far I have to go.

BTW Monterey's also the setting for Steinbeck's Cannery Row, though the sardine cannery's an aquarium now.

Steve what a brilliant shot. I was unable to see the image before today only the words were visible . However now it all makes sense. Where would this be?

re: Baby photos of twins. Priceless

I know! There are some young twins in my extended family, and Hebe is quite right, they are like baby birds. I have a video of them aged about 2, perched side-by-side on one of their Papa's legs, demanding to be fed the toast he is trying to eat, squealing "More, more!" after each bite they are given. Papa is very lucky if he gets one bite in three.

Aw, shucks, thanks Jackson. This blog is such an awesome place for sharing, and everyone posts such interesting things! It's been quite a pick-me-up for me over the last couple of weeks when I've been feeling a bit stressed. Arohanui, everyone.

And tomorrow I'm off for a sojourn in sunny Dunedin! So dry the water pipes are rupturing! Apparently. No doubt my arrival with togs and sunscreen will precipitate a sudden change....

That would be from my back porch up on Burma road in Peria, looking through the ti trees.

We don't do these thing because they are easy, we do them because we're hard, ;-)

Islander mentioned hail, which, for whatever reason, we don't see a lot of around these parts, but I have been having "fun" with other kinds of meteorological frozen things. Dawn, New Years Day in my wife's home village in Yanqing County, for example. I go out to check on the car, which, this time of year I park in a patch of field that gets the sun as early as possible, and this is what I see from the driver's seat. That's not just frost, that ice is so solid that the best course of action is to wait for the sun to melt it off, cos it's not easy to dislodge any other way. And even after sitting in the sun for a few hours, it took the 15 minute drive into the county town and a couple more hours sitting in the sun while we did our shopping before I could get any wiper fluid to squirt far enough to actually be on any use cleaning the windscreen. That stuff is supposed to be good down to minus 25, and although Yanqing is Beijing's coldest county by virtue of its altitude, it doesn't (at least, officially) get that cold.

Not the same moon, but reminded me of these shots off our back porch. G10. ISO 100 f/2.8 15s.

That makes it all the more worthwhile. Cheers.

  • Islander, in reply to Chris Waugh,

I should come clean and explain that the hail is actually forecast for *inland* Otago & Southland - it'll be a tad cool & rainy on the coasts, but I thought lilith's prediction deserved support!

Annd, that is one chilly photo Chris- even with the sun's attempt at brightness..!

  • Geoff Lealand,

My holiday snaps (watch this space). Just back from a couple of days in Bowentown (the isthmus that extends beyond Waihi Beach) and spent much of Monday afternoon salvaging 20kg bags of milk powder (and much heavier when saturated) from a shattered shipping container from the Rena. Especially delightful when you hoisted a bag on your shoulder, for it to leak down your front and through your hair. Stunk of eau de Fonterra for the next day. This morning the beach was a mess of sawn timber and logs.

  • Chris Waugh,

Well, I was kinda cheating a little bit with the sun. It had just popped over the Jundushan mountains along the southern rim of the basin, but hadn't yet cleared either the poplars that line the old highway that runs along the side of our village or the dried up old corn stalks that one of the farmers had left standing after the harvest. But yeah, it's cold up there.

On the plus side, summers up there are much, much more tolerable than here in Beijing.
