I freed a cicada from a web on Thursday. Took a bit of time to adjust to freedom but most satisfying to see it fly away.

    Nice little series Lilith.

Was just alerted to this example of chronophotography. Clever stuff.

Hey, we were just discussing your Grasshopper and considered that it may have been very young and had not fully developed it's exoskeleton and would have been rather vulnerable but also rather flexible.

  • Jackie Clark,

I am seething, nay roiling, with jealousy. I NEED AN SLR.

  • JacksonP,

    As you were. Wrong photo.

Jackie, what's your camera? Many of mine on here are taken with my Canon G10 compact. Admittedly a good camera, but if we start putting you off using what you've got, then we're doing it wrong.

Going back to the start, the best camera is still 'the one in hand'.

Yes, I was admiring that earlier on Smithsonian, and wondering if the image blending would be hard to do. It's a stunning result, and the whole is much more interesting than any of its individual parts.

    I NEED AN SLR.

Our cheapish Canon Power Shot A470 is all good. I would use sunset setting to take evening shots and such like. This was on that camera. F3.2, ISO 400, 1 second, no flash. A wall instead of tripod was used here.

Could well be, Sofie! I was trying to imagine how all the plates of the exoskeleton might articulate so it could bend like that, but it is a pretty impressive curve! Glad y'all like it.

Yeah, to echo Jackson and Sofie: not necessarily! The better digital compacts blur the old distinction between SLR and compact. And an SLR is bulky to carry and you can waste a lot of time getting it in and out of your bag and changing lenses. Or miss a shot because you’ve left it at home!

In addition, I’ve noticed people react differently to being photographed with an SLR and a compact; as soon as you cover your face with your camera, they tense up. Compacts that you hold down at chest level are much less intrusive and intimidating.

Some great photography here, I am in awe :)

Do you use CHDK (Canon Hack Development Kit)? I have a beaten up collection of such cameras (canon made lovely 5 Megapixel chips) mostly for mucking about with timelapses. But CHDK does a lot more- bracketing, exposures as long as you like, raw files- they've unlocked the hardware in a really cool way.

Moulting time. Considering they're saddled with the taxonomic handle of turdus ('true thrushes'), you'd expect them to look at least that scruffy at all times.

    Rob:
Does the Canon mod screw with your menu? I've been tempted to download it for my Powershot 650 but I've been a bit timid.

  • Rob Stowell,

    @Joe:
No, it’s totally non-destructive (though there are things you could do with it that might be, and it probably screws your warranty.) It sits on the SD card, and you use a combination of buttons to activate it. If you don’t, the camera just operates as usual. Takes a bit of getting used to, but can do some cool stuff (Not that I’ve achieved much- I’ve seen other peoples shots- eg there was a thread on the wiki where people were showing off their lightening pics- some great ones.)

  • Steve Barnes,

I was looking at CHDK for our 1100D but figured the camera is capable of things I have yet to get to grips with. I do, however have a Powershot I could play with.
I will give it a go in the not too distant future. ;-)
