Crucially, so far whatever contact JK had with Whale, he was smart/lucky enough to a/ use a proxy, Ede or b/ talk, rather than email or text. Just the harmless old metadata on Slater's phone would be interesting. -

Kind of a shame that the Minister of Justice is gone, it would be great to hear her considered judgment on this.
Key in 2011, Slater in 2014 ... freedom of speech under attack, Free Speech Coalition silent.

I know a lot of working journalists are dismissive of Herman and Chomsky's "propaganda model," but I can't help thinking the glimpse behind the curtain we've had over the past few weeks tends to confirm it. The actions of the "government media team," and media willingness to be thus controlled and dictated to, provide a vivid case study in how the ideas of the ruling class get to be the ruling ideas, in this little epoch anyway.

For mine, Ms Pagani's history was sufficient to not prefer her relative to many other longstanding members.. This just helps me rationalise my prejudice.

FWIW, I find Hooton a more credible in all this, 'cause I know what he believes... Then again, I was surprised by Mora's/RNZ's subtle bias so perhaps I'm up for the Pollyanna award?

Possibly, they know it's been so widespread, and lead from the top, that there's no way to counter it so they just going to make believe it never happened. Good luck with that strategy.

i haven't lived in NZ for a long time, and i hardly ever watch videos with Key in them, but looking at that youtube clip, i just cannot figure something out. his smirk is arrogant and sickening, his demeanour is patronising. why is this guy so popular with "middle nz"? i cannot fathom it at all. not even slightly. everything about him seems evasive and un-leader-like. the act he puts on for the cameras seems so thin and transparent. the "nice bloke" thing, it's just an act, but people don't see that? i despised Muldoon back in the day too, but at least he had some leadership qualities so it was possible to see why a big chunk of the population liked him. but Key? cannot figure it at all. is this some sort of reflection of how people in NZ have lost their world-famous "bullshit detector" instinct? some pop-psych or even professional psychological analysis of how this works would be much appreciated. anyone? thanks.

It's a machine that has been operating for many years . Slowly slowly catchy monkey. To question the machine, you are labelled a "conspiracy theorist". At the mo , "it's a left wing smear campaign". The threat , the fear , the trust in our leader to look after us is all part of the machine. As soon as the media believes, it becomes a constant feed of press releases. Our media just copy and paste. then the complicit Mps thinking the Slug is an avenue finished off their ability to con. That only took money and there is plenty of that on the right.

It's worth noting that a few weeks ago, the indignation over the 'Fuck John Key' chant was not entirely feigned. Some people had a really hard time believing that other people might genuinely despise their guy. I'm surrounded socially by people who dislike Key, but I know that there are social communities who believe wholly different things about him.

It's utterly depressing. The New Zealand I thought I knew has hardened into a mini-me reflection of the very worst of american republican/democrat division.
A trivial analogy would liken it to one of those Beatles stereo LPs from the early days.Stuff in the right channel, stuff in the left channel and a yawning chasm in the middle. Of course, there are the other parties operating but the continual propaganda shaping their profile to the hard-core entrenched head-in-the-sanders has them as some sort of greek hydra or worse.
Key is appalling. Charmless, smarmy, witless, utterly untrustworthy. But to his supporters he's _their_ charmless, smarmy, witless liar and you'd have to pry him from their cold, dead hands.
The government are neck deep in Slaters pigshit yet it seems that as long as the head-in-the-sanders can still see the flop sweat on Key's brow it's a sign he still has a pulse.
It's a travesty.
