From memory Simon Mercep almost got Jonesed for his "and how does that make you feel?" questions,

Contractor posts clips from cbd red zone's streets. As close as most of us will get unless we're visiting rugby journalists or Rachel Hunter.

And some eqnz retail humour (pic).

Finally, we have some idea of what the City looks like now.
I have to say that from what I saw on the videos that the damage is far less than I had imagined, I expected to see very few unbroken windows for a start and you can't tell me it is ALL safety glass.
The biggest surprise was how little activity there seemed to be, I was expecting rows upon rows of trucks being loaded with rubble and carted away, instead of numerous pieces heavy machinery sitting idle and these videos were shot on a Monday and a Thursday?. -
Just thinking, in reply to
I didn't notice too many piles of rubble. They've been cleared already.
It was problematic in that it lumped everything as one - asbestos, polystyeren, kauri timbers etc.
Now the focus is on taking as much out of it first - glass, furnishings. Then dropping it.
What was the rush to demolish, as it means there's nothing to go back to. -
A rare admission from the Fieldmarshall this morning (though without any consequence, naturally).
Brownlee promised in June that, in some cases, home improvements like new kitchens would be included in the government settlement offer for red zone houses.
"If people have, for example, put in a new bathroom or a new kitchen where there are no consenting issues, then clearly they will have receipts that will enable that expenditure to be considered in the end valuation,'' he said in June.
But the offer is only valid if the improvement has added to the footprint of the house.
Brownlee apologised for the promise during an appearance on TV ONE's Q&A show on Sunday morning.
"I was wrong. Yeah, I shouldn't have made that statement, because it's too hard in the end to live up to it," he said.
"You've got to be quite harsh about this and say that as of the day the house was damaged, there was a huge loss to those people, and we're trying to preserve that on a very very broad scale. And, you know, I'm sorry that in the heat of the moment, pressured, I said something that was not able to be delivered."
Check the full Q&A interview: 16 min clip or transcript
and the subsequent panel discussion: 7 min clip or transcript.Jon Johannsson was in particularly good form about the bigger picture and the influence of foreign reinsurers:
Well, and it sort of reminds us with Gerry trooping off Geneva that, in fact, you know, in a sense what's happened - our violent geography has caught up with 21st-century assessments of risk. And as a small, tiny nation, we are really at the whim of way bigger global forces here.

...and delivered with very little real regret, this 'apology' from Brownlee is nothing more than a limp 'my bad!' Easily said, with massive repercussions for many individuals - and how convenient for the powers that be - that is the core of Brownlee's job, bullying and misleading - the master illusionist at work!

Across the street from today's royal visit-style cabinet meeting. About 14 police, around 3 times that many protesters. Only accredited media allowed to film or photograph from footpath outside hotel, dignitaries left via back entrance.
Toot. -
That was a real photo op for the Auckland election this year.
The only site closer to the Airport or further from Christchurch City would have been the Koru Club.

3410,
today's royal visit-style cabinet meeting.
Or - as One News called it - "a historic symbolic show of support".

Heh, I distinctly remember saying something like that to a customer once, when I fucked up her rental car order. She accused me of being "Just like Jim Bolger. Sorry, but not gonna do anything about it". It did undermine her ascendant dudgeon, when I burst out laughing. I got her a car in the end, unlike Bolger.

Sacha, in reply to
Heh. Some governments are ideologically opposed to delivering. Crowds out the small-weenied free market, apparently.

That brought a tear to my eye.

No I wasn't. Only vicariously, via my Evil Twin, whose picture-taking skills are way better than mine. Her Chch photo blog should be up & running soon, in the meantime . . .Definitely intend to be here though.

At last & finally. You tell 'em Phil.
Uh-oh -Labour has yet to announce its Canterbury earthquake recovery policy.
"We haven't got to that point yet, but it won't be too many weeks away," Goff said.
He had not met major insurers to discuss policy, but he would talk to industry leaders before any announcement.
Should Phil ever be in a position to knock heads together, you can be sure he'll ask nicely first.

are you also selling boots of reference in Linwood, Ian?

Just loving this copy:
New Zealanders can put behind them 12 months of despair caused by a devastating earthquake, tragic mine explosion and a fluttering economy to begin a six-week party as the All Blacks beat Tonga 41-10 in the opening match of the Rugby World Cup last night.
You know what? Cantabrians would LOVE to put “12 months of despair” behind us, unfortunately no amount of footy games can make our city magically reappear.
Would it have been so hard to say, “it’s been a hard year for NZ, but here’s a happy occasion”?
-
Well said Lilith.
Had a bike around the cordon. First time I've seen the PGC building site since the rush and dust of the initial aftermath. Thought of a few I knew and their energy forgetting things done.
The Daffs are out and most people shared a smile, and the random stranger chats.
I wonder what is to come. The sites are level due to "safety" & archeology (dem bones dem bone dem dry bones) and so many buildings that look OK are now "Uneconomical" to repair. I suspect it's the land.
The ECan bunker was all but a nuclear shelter. Must be the land beneath.
