Watching people watch me and Megan going to SlutWalk was awesome! SlutWalk was awesome! Derby was awesome! After-derby drinking was awesome! Getting told off by derby girls for being too sleazy? Priceless.

ooooo, fine distinction between slutty and sleazy. Topic for another thread perhaps?

Rather late to this one buuut I've been trying to find a dissenting article I read somewhere from an American feminist on Slutwalk - but can't, however today ran across this Slutwalk: Walk of Shame or McFeminism? by an Indian feminist, which says the same kinda thing from her perspective...
SlutWalk is an annoying, antifeminist paradox. It is recreational hacktivism of the kind which topples over the very ideas that it is meant to uphold, by tearing down feminism (from Toronto to Delhi) and pandering to ignorant notions of patriarchy-friendly (!) ‘gender equity’. It packages serious issues that Indian feminism has been dealing with for years into a designer occasion that plays right into all the conventions and clichés that femininity worldwide is expected to conform to, challenging nothing and confirming chauvinist male attitudes by reassuring them that all the ‘sluts’ *giggle* really want is the licence to wear really tiny skirts and won’t they allow that pwetty please?

Which is lovely but not at all what SlutWalk was about. And seriously: *giggle* and "pwetty"? We couldn't engage on the issue without demeaning the people involved? I mean, there are two messages:
- stop blaming victims for being raped, and
- the way a woman dresses is irrelevant to your chances of copping off with her
Which one of those is "tearing down feminism"?ETA: And yes, SlutWalk is culturally-specific. That's because it's a protest against an aspect of Western culture. Ergo, it may not translate well in other cultural contexts. Why should it have to?

And I suspect many Western feminists would be (or should be) very leery of swinging into Mumbai and giving Indian women a good scolding for not being sufficiently "authentic". Because talking out your (often) white privileged arse to women of colour and those who exist in very different socio-political contexts is every bit as nasty as it sounds.

SlutWalk was basically a franchise operation. So the organisers of any particular SlutWalk were always locals.

Oh, quite. But I think Richard was being a teeny tad disingenuous because, yeah, can we all just take as read that the Global Femme-Borg Collective doesn't exist? Really. Please.
