Hebe,

Beautiful pictures: I'm going to walk this one! -

A good book, though? Don't get to read many novels, except for old Graham Greene 'entertainments' (I have a collection of the old Penguin editions). Too many magazines to read or books to review.
On another medium, do go to The Descendants. A lovely, quiet and thoroughly grown-up movie.

I liked it, but I liked others of hers more. Sing to me, dreamer is a favourite. And her memoir with recipes, The Kindness of Strangers , is amazing. She spins a very fine anecdote, and I was captivated by her telling of her own story, which is richer and stranger than the stories she tells in her novels.

A good book,
I read recipe books, or more accurately food writing and garden writing when I haven't got time for fiction. I like taking small bites (sorry,) especially of late Nigel Slater's "Tender" , Elisabeth Luard. Janet Luke's Green Urban Living is good -- she's more informative than writerly. Animal Vegetable Miracle was good.

Rob i will put this on my bucket list for sure. Stunning scenery. Could one walk it during snow season? How long would it take?

Lots of ways up the mountain- the shortest/easiest is the Purau saddle under ‘The Monument’, steep first 40 minutes, about 4 hours return. Aged 15, two mates and I pushed our bikes up that track in the snow, so we could ride down to Diamond Harbour (another route up). Fun but silly. Worth remembering how the weather can change, though- even in summer.
Other routes include the Port Levy Saddle (probably my favourite- amazing old totara skeletons), Bradley’s Estate in Charteris Bay (bloody steep!), via Gebbies Pass and the Packhorse hut, and Kaituna Valley (never done this one- looks lovely, more bush on the southern side.) If you have a willing driver, you can go up and come down in very different spots. You’d want a whole day I think.
The summit is a wonderful top-of-the-world feeling, for sure- well worth it :)
(The feel of it has been altered by the presence of cellphone towers, now- great reception, though!) -

It’s a great walk that way, over to the Port Levy Saddle
Do they really have GIANT foxgloves up there? that one must be at least 3 metres tall.

Ruby's had a great summer, thanks for asking.

Oh she looks so fit and healthy. :) Their energy is unsurpassed at a young age. I can run really well, in my dreams.
Hope your mum is feeling better about her mishap. -

Mum’s fine, thanks Sofie. As is the other victim in that scenario. As for young girls who have unsupassed energy…….

Because this seems a catch-all discussion, gathering up the threads of summer, a recommendation--went to a screening tonight at the Regent in Te Awamutu of the NZ film Netherwood, which the directors/producers are travelling around the country (having failed to find a distributor). A bit of a bloke's movie but well made and worthy of support, if and when it comes your way.

I seem to remember getting better pics out of my old Nokia N72 than my new Nokia 5230.... You'll just have to trust me that this sunset was way more awesome than it looks. A touch on the chilly side, though. Taken from the Rishang Market, east side of Yanqing County Town, looking past the newish Protestant church, as we were stocking up on the last of the CNY goodies.
