they would have to be a moron.

Well they cant misconstrue that ;-)

I should not read opinion pieces some days. I dont know who Tracy Watkins( a search gives little to no clue as to what she is about although I noted with dread some connection with Whaleoil) is or whether she was just doing her word quota for the day.
Her lazy contribution today on Stuff is just that, lazy journalism.

  • Pete, in reply to Paul Campbell,

I'm just one person now implacably opposed to ever voting Labour again since this semiauto ban but there are quite a few of us now

I will fight this ban however I legally am able and will never again aid or assist anyone who has supported it

I am ashamed of this country

Sorry you feel that way, Pete.

Many of your previous comments (under the name) suggest you are not an unreasonable person, so I hope you can reconsider in time. Not for Labour's sake - that doesn't matter at all, because all serious parties support the ban. But for the wider community's, and indeed your own. I see no cause for shame.

  • Ian Dalziel, in reply to Pete,

You do realise all Parties voted for this ban - so will we have to have a new gun lobby party that you can bring yourself to vote for?

The Gun Lobby so successfully turned Paula Bennett's head in 2017 that she only adopted 7 out of 20 recommendatons - had they pulled their heads in we might not be in the situation we are now - be careful what you wish and push for can be good advice at times...

Gosh, that seems a bit harsh.

She's Stuff's "political editor". Total brown-nose for National. Misses John Key dreadfully.

Apropos of guns and gun lobbying, Al Jazeera has just ripped One Nation a new one in Australia.

Really? Other nations seem to be praising how we are handling this terrible situation. I do not recall any previous NZ leader being projected onto a skyscraper either.

You allowed to say silly stuff like that just dont do anything silly is all we ask.

Al Jazeera has just ripped One Nation a new one

The excuses are coming thick and fast ... their just arabs..... they taped us when we were drunk and shit talking....um um um I was just talking like I do out on the farm. One nation are scum and the US gun industry is populated with evil pricks hiding behind their religion.

I assume thats the one where she just repeats what some 'Journalist' at The Australian says, or should I say where she echoes what she'd like to say from out of the pages of a Murdoch Newspaper.
I'm starting to think that with at least 2 anti-muslim stories per paper over a year Murdoch and News International have been grooming the public (and blokes like the scumbag aussie in chch) to do their bidding - now the Murdoch family has sold up their old movie interests (many of which must just be about in the public domain) and are freshly cashed up billionaires what will they do next...
They'll probably take their rhetoric and destructive barracking to higher new levels - or News levels as it should be known.

Tracy Watkins is renowned for throwing marbles on the dancefloor as far as anyone not National is concerned.

Hey Pete. I'm sure it's not you... it's those other 4.9m kiwis who have it completely wrong, eh. I assume you're not defending anyone's god-given "right" to possess instruments of mass murder, but without some sort of reasoning, it's hard to understand how anyone with even half a brain would follow the NRA line.

Is there any particular reason you are so far out of step with the rest of the country?

From Christchurch terrorist to Canadian "free speech" fraud, Lauren Southern: one degree of separation. Linked by his cash, linked by their work.

    "Free Speech Coalition", still nothing?

  • Ian Dalziel,

I watched the Australian QandA show with Liberal party Vice President Teena McQueen and the Stuff article was bang on about a trainwreck
That woman is like an Aussie Sarah Palin – no idea about reality for average people and the comments at You Tube are largely supportive of her stance and views…
There’s also a Bill Clinton lookalike on the panel who is pretty grim as well – but the other guests and audience try to keep them grounded, unsuccessfully – frightening really.

  • Tom Semmens,

I was wondering how it would take things to get back to normal. As it turns out, about two weeks.

it is all well and good for the Herald and it’s owners to throw their hands in the air in horror and exclaim “how did we get here????” but the reality is they contribute to the febrile atmosphere of entitlement, anger, othering, intolerance and all the rest of it every damn time they publish a rant by this asshole and all the rest of the clickbait assholes in their stable.

The MSM need to own their contribution to the growth of hate. There is a direct cultural line linking Mike Hosking and all the other angry shock jocks to the logical outcome of constant ravings against the “enemy” and that logical outcome is the Christchurch shooter.

That column was an embarrassment. Just hapless.

Audrey Young’s column in the Herald today is also pretty weird – like it’s written through gritted teeth or something. The gallery stalwarts do flounder when the story moves beyond their turf.

The Hosking lunacy and Philip Neals crap are exposed as factually wrong by Spinoff Guest writer Lisa Marriott

Hosking and ilk need to be shown up for the muck stirrers they are all the time. But doing the research is more time consuming than standing in front of your iphone while in a newsroom and reeling off a diatribe of populist bullshit.

Its known as brand Hosking it should be brand Complete & Utter Fucking Bollocks

  • Simon Lyall,

There is this article by John Tamihere which is mostly-okay and ends with:

And so, March 15, 2019 is a significant day in our nationhood story and it will empower us to stand up against intolerance, hate and the infliction of hurt solely because of colour, race or creed.

but that is right after he contrasts Muslims with the "we as a nation" and has a huge dig at atheists and agnostics. Note that part of the anti-atheists quote was used in the print headline.

I guess your mean this little gem of stupidity
'but when the chips are down and death visits, everyone seizes upon faith – everyone'.

Do the chips really need to be down for a visit from death? Jeez these so called columnists and their need to use populist phrases. Well I suppose he got used to doing that on that shit radio show he had with that other tool, Jackson.

Faith? Really? If some deranged arsehole was pointing a gun the words 'Please god no!' might be one of the things I would scream tho it barely qualifies as a death bed conversion. If I have a choice I'd rather go out like Aldous Huxley soaring towards the infinite.
So I'd like to say to Mr Tamihere if he ever happens upon my words. 'You can fuck right off mate, and dont presume to know what would be on mine or anyone else's mind should death come knocking in whatever circumstance it finds us.'

Tamihere said: when the chips are down and death visits, everyone seizes upon faith

I kept the faith and I kept voting
Not for the iron fist but for the helping hand
For theirs is a land with a wall around it
And mine is a faith in my fellow man
Theirs is a land of hope and glory
Mine is the green field and the factory floor
Theirs are the skies all dark with bombers
And mine is the peace we know
    Between the wars
