I really enjoyed Radiation at its best – smart, fun writing about the telly. It’s a medium that so many people have conflicted emotions over, so it’s always good when someone can write well about the telly they love. Thanks for the good words, Fiona.

Creative constipation and neurotic self-criticism are two flavours that do not go together; especially with some serious dental work and the only holiday I'm going to get this year (it's pretty bad form to vanish to your host's spare room and blow out their broadband cap).

Dude, I haven't seen anything that makes it look as bad as it is. Consider: no-one has been able to remove food from the CBD for six weeks. When we get back in there, we'll have to battle rats, street by street. The only thing that's going to drown out the smell of rotting fish is if we do actually flood the sewerage ponds, which is looking quite likely.

Dude, I haven’t seen anything that makes it look as bad as it is.

That was what our studio director told me in week one, after he'd been down directing live coverage:

September earthquake: Not actually as bad as it looked on the telly.

February earthquake: Way, way, way worse than you can see on the telly.

Bad food jokes aside, the CD video footage of the red zone made it look uncomprehendingly bad enough, from what I saw. And the ongoing sagas people are having with ECNZ and their discrepancy with insurers, builders and plain human decency would be driving good people to the brink of... well to the brink.

I always enjoy your writing, Fiona, wherever it resides.
