Megan has blogged our experiences of wandering around Wellington in costume pre-SlutWalk, which was an interesting sociological experiment.

Cheryl Bernstein describes being in her local park playground with her daughter, as part of another eloquent exploration of the impact of #eqnz on Chch's architectural history. h/t Giovanni

She had just got off the slide when the big earthquake struck. There was a deep, terrible low boom, first, I think, though it's hard to remember the exact sequence in which things happened. The park tipped from side to side and I couldn't stand. I caught my daughter up in my arms, and sat down hard on the damp bark chips of the playground. The trees and the lamp standards beat back and forth furiously. I saw waves run across the big green field, as if it were liquid, as if it were an ocean, as if it were a tablecloth picked up and shaken out at a Victorian garden party. Across the stream the back wall of a house, seriously damaged in the earlier quakes, collapsed in a cloud of red brick dust. A huge pile of slates slipped off scaffolding around a partially-repaired roof and crashed to the ground. A jet of water shot skyward from the drinking fountain.

There was silence, and then the sirens started.

  • Lucy Stewart, in reply to Emma Hart,

You have to remember that that northern chick is a ticking time bomb and that one day she’ll give you a wolloping completely out of the blue that will make what you’re getting from Christchurch look like a neck massage – and don’t expect to get any help as quickly as you did with Christchurch either, there’s only two exits from her place and she’s set it up to trap you in there with her when she cut loose!

If something happens to Wellington while I'm overseas I may actually just lose it completely. That's your warning, Wairarapa faultline. You don't want me to lose it, right? (I mean, at least a nice new volcano in Auckland would give us some variety.)

OT, but it's Friday, and I think Emma and others might like some Japanese Goth-Pop poseurs. Never a bad time for that, right?!

I am actually embarrassed by how many times I have watched that silly BBC docudrama on the subject, so, er. Yes.

And that's precisely the reason all this earthquake nonsense needs to stop - I've got to have somewhere to come back to when I flee the inevitable madness of supervolcanoes/federal bankruptcy/right-wing theocracy/Marxist fascism/mutant uprising/alien robots. You people need to take better care of the place while I'm gone, is all I'm saying.

Hang on, I'm in Auckland next week... (that's fair warning to every Feijoa-based drink available too, funny the things you miss).

The volcanoes used to scare me growing up in Sth Auckland, particularly around the time Maurice Gee's Under the Mountain was on the tele.

Emma, great news about your WOF and, unless I am still confused, I to am looking forward to hearing more about your various projects.

Incidentally, can someone ensure Alisdair Thompson's gone by Tuesday, I don't want to be talking about that arse!

  • Lara,

I hadn't even known I was doing it. I didn't feel it let go when I left – though to be fair I was probably drunk. I'm not all that conscious of it now, two days later. This is just life now. But I felt it kick in. That's the only way I know how much I'm not myself any more.

I was in Wellington for three days over that weekend. It was almost unreal. I came back to Chch full of joie de vivre, feeling safe. I tried, I really tried, to hold onto that optimism without breaking it. But it slipped away so quickly. That trip (and some other things) have made me realise that I'm focussed so much on coping that I haven't noticed that I'm not. And the starkness of that is scary. It will get better, it will. It's just gets harder to believe it. I'll be going away again soon I think. And it will be a relief.

I'm so glad to hear that your Tardis got it's WOF Emma! That is good news.

  • David Hood,

Everyone deserves to live in zeppelins. In a cool, non-explody kind of way. I must admit I like the theory that the more unusual a parallel universe you live in, the more zeppelins it has. Which logically means our own universe is not the prime one.

Yes, if it were somehow possible to make helium, rather than buy it from the United States, there might be more of them around now.

I'm thinking that Maui could provide enough helium for a few zeppelins, should the appropriate extraction gear be installed.

He could probably extort helium straight from the Sun, the poor thing is shit scared of him.

  • Isabel Hitchings, in reply to Megan Wegan,

I tell those guys to come here, because I don’t trust myself around Christchurch anymore.

I’m going to have to manufacture an excuse to come up to Wellington and be drunk and disreputable again sometime soon, aren’t I? I do find the getting away thing double edged though – it’s a chance to heal and it does give me more strength to keep on here but that first day back before the coping slides back into place is so raw and brutal.

My parents were down from Nelson this weekend for my son’s birthday. This was the first time they’d visited since the February quake so we took them on a tour around the cordon and out to Sumner past Redcliffs and Shag Rock. I don’t think I’ve ever seen them so subdued – I very, nearly felt guilty for subjecting them to all of that.
