Don't you have enough issues in Berhampore, without roaming bison?

Who said I was going to let it roam? We have a backyard with a trampoline and everything.

  • Lilith __, in reply to giovanni tiso,

If I were Ian D, I’d be able to write a punning poem about bouncing backyard bisons in Berhampore. As I’m not, I can only note the poetic potential.

  • BenWilson, in reply to sally jones,

But I appreciate what feels like a whole lot of support (for the cause) coming from your corner, not to presume anything in the way of support for my personal views, of course.

I guess it will feel that way if you don't care to read the comments and consider the ideas in them. It has actually toed and froed around your attempt to seize definition, which led to it being

sidetracked by a largely semantic question over the usefulness of the label feminist without much discussion of feminist politics

Do you seriously not want to own having caused this? Makes me wish I hadn't bothered to question whether "lifestyle feminist" really was a sneer (it was), and whether your attempt to turn the debate on itself was a deliberate tactic (it seems so).

  • Danielle,

You’ve also implied that I am not an activist. That my feminism is waffly crap, and I don’t ‘do anything’.

My feminism actually *is* waffly crap. What's more, I buy girly shit all the time and I can't even drive a forklift. I have no idea why Sally thinks I'm more 'worthy' than you or Emma, Megan.

  • Jolisa,

Got up this morning, got dressed -- TOFO-iest bra, cute skirt, plain T-shirt, amazing shoes, radical feminist brain (I know, totally matchy-matchy, it's just what fell out of the wardrobe) -- and got stuff done. Wrangled my kids, tidied my mum's house, helped a friend, drove to Hamilton, thought about Afghanistan, planned some work.

Tomorrow, the gods willing, I'll do it all over again, slightly different stuff in a slightly different outfit.

This is not "lifestyle feminism": it's my one and only life, with feminism and style in it, inextricable elements of its warp and weft.

To reiterate Danielle's mindbendingly awesome link to the Isley Brothers: it's my thing. It's Emma's thing. And it is the thing of any woman or man or child who wants to look delicious and/or feel good, in whatever way they choose, while they can, while they're here. Ain't nobody else's thing.

(You know what else, that's not even my feminism talking. It's my duh-ism).

Which is all to say, What Emma Originally Said:

My confidence to dress as I please is precious, and I think it's feminist, and I'm not going to put it away in a hurry.

You put a bison in your backyard, you ain't gonna have a trampoline long. Those things are huge.

I'm mentally underlining this sentence. Hurrah.

I'm mentally editing it (warp and weft are inextricable by definition; the shorter the sentence the better the rhythm). But glad it struck home!

Hang in there. I'm leaning on Russell to drum up some funding for a PAS Feminist Forklift Workshop (come as you are, naturally).

  • Russell Brown,

    Hi!

I was going to offer a bit of an admonition thing about us being unkind to each other, but things seem to be working out. Meanwhile, here's Sarah Daniell's awesome interview with John Campell about being the only guy in the village at VUW gender studies:

Also, Amanda Palmer totally put her foot on my chair and dominated me this evening. And sang. Man, she has a voice.

Yes, hopefully. But I am wondering what on earth to wear at the Pot Luck tomorrow. Speedos are definitely out, but maybe I need to consider a MBOFO top. Or there's the vertical stripes with the collar up combo, which always goes down a treat.

'Life is about being as two-eyed as possible'.

That's a t-shirt. With John's mug shot on it glaring into the auto-cue.

PS. I meant that in a good way.

That she does – though, honestly, I always like the theory of the Dresden Dolls more than the practice. Neil Gaiman is a soppy old bastard who really loves and misses his wife though, bless ’m. Please send her home in one piece, or the internet will burn New Zealand with angry geek fire.

I don’t even own any, FTR. You are scaring me a little bit too, just so you know. ;-)

Just to sum up, I think this is about as apposite as I could find. In relation to this thread, BTW, not speedos.

ETA: Why is this reply to Craig? He didn’t even mention my speedos. Sorry, pushed the wrong button.

I'm not scary. Really I'm not. I'm just very excited that some of my favourite people will all be in the same place at the same time. I work with children for a living so it is my professional responsibility to find the joy in everything. Okay? Not scary joy, appropriate joy, mind.
