The sun sets over Mt Roskill last night seen from Big King.

  • Jackie Clark,

I know exactly the spot you were standing in, Bruce. Big King was my 2nd home for 12 years. What with new influxes and a change of demographic, and some of Ruby's more raucous behaviour being frowned upon by people who don't know her, we've transferred our affections elsewhere for the moment, but it will always be a huge part of my life.

  • Hilary Stace,

Sad to hear that Kawhia is in the news for a violent incident involving an attack on the local police officer. But I suppose such communities are microcosms of bigger places. We came across that policeman last week. It was a hot still day and I was sitting by the sea reading my book and a ute pulled up outside the nearby unit. A woman got out yelling at the male driver and the world in general. How could you be so angry in such a beautiful peaceful place, was my initial reaction. Hard to know what to do in such a situation - not in the motor camp rules. So I did the usual thing of ignoring it all and finding a quieter place to read. Not long after a couple of police vehicles arrived, and several people including that cop - laid back but efficient, as imagine country cops should be. Later campers and cops and the woman in the back seat waved at each other as the car drove away. (Apparently it was a 'mental health issue'.)

I only discovered Big King last year, and for me it's the Auckland volcano I can't quite get up on my bike. I get to the crest of the hill, see the city to the north and then just lose the will for the final 30m to the water tank.

    One day ...

  • Jackie Clark,

You don't see too many bikers up there funnily enough - even most of the really young, fit ones aren't quite up to it.

Made a flying visit to the annual Elvis Presley memorial day at Henderson's Cranwell Park this morning. Lots of restored/modified classic cars on display.

And by implication, I'm not either of those things? ;-)

It's quite nice coming down, though. There's a path to some quiet streets down the western side.

Well the final 30m walking up almost did for me. It's a great way to fit some serious exercise in a short walk.

Nice. Since we’re in retro mode, a few of us took our old (and some new) scooters to Bethells today. Good ride, and there was no way I wasn’t jumping in the ocean at the end, in spite of being unprepared. Was perfect out there. Sand was blistering hot though.

Summer red hot pokers foregrounding the daily soap opera of the birds on my riverbank willow log, while a silvereye (of indeterminate sex) busily peers up the frilly skirts of the next red hot poker, with intent.

  • Geoff Lealand,

I don't have photos but there are two stout young fellows in our front garden this morning, connecting our house to fibre optic. New technology of course, but it still entails digging trenches, tree pruning and crawling under the house.

I intend, shortly, to send a message around about hosting a PA picnic.

For those familiar with the gravel Queenstown Bay Domain foreshore, there is a bit of driftwood on it in the wake of the heavy rains in the headwaters of the Wakatipu.
