  • Tim Gray,

Surely "tremendous", because everything surely has been.

Or "Putinism", coined I believe by TIME magazine.

Any correlation between these two words may or may not be coincidental.

    KEGACY
I just made that up so it has no legs. But you’d have to be drunk and wearing your best beer goggles to see any legacy this very junior partner in Cocksplat, Fucktrumpet and Numpty who claims he was a Prime Minister at some stage in his career and left something behind, even he isnt sure what.
SHIT WEASEL WHITE AF lives in an echo chamber where Lying is a planet in ultra fast orbit and Truth is well and truly asleep or in the restroom with constipation.
And what do opinion writers at the Herald do? Well besides well practiced kiss up kick down knee jerk writing and sycophantic nonsense riddled with confirmation bias. They puff themselves up a disapproving wind, on a smile of the Labour party leader and display wide eyed wonder at the Dipton Dribbler who done good.
A person of so limited a vocabulary that he drops the register of his voice an octave or two to make his vocal dribbling take on an air of authority.
So as perchance…one last insult… to us… 2016 bequeaths us…him and his recycled(if only we could) cohort of Joycean squislings.
Its not the left that has lost its way, its humanity.
now wheres my dong..SHITGIBBONS the lot of ’em.

2016 WAS SUCH AN ANGRY YEAR.
And it aint gunna get better soon.
Think I’ll be a hippie from now on.
Who needs a house? not me I’m free as a mole, burrowing down
    I’ll reach those miners myself.
    #RIP ANGER

Yes seclusion rooms have popped up all over NZ - who knew?

I also hate 'social investment' and fear we will hear more next year of the new PM's pet policy to privatise or delegate social services and share personal details of clients with whatever government agency or politician wants them.

A group of us have spent this year trying to get publicity and justice for Ashley Peacock but he continues to spend his days locked up on a Porirua hillside.

That is very probably who he worked for, but I believe you have the exact job-title a little over-accounted for in the syllable stakes? (but then, over accounting is probably part of the job description?)

I still cant figure out if he was "Pri-Minster" or "Pry-Mincer" ?

AF is definitely word of the year in the gossip mags

I’m at a loss here. When I see "AF" it’s a button on an OHC, and stands for "auto-focus" … so is that like a selfie?

  • FletcherB,

Also, as much as I hate the concept itself... I'm thinking my vote is for "post-truth" as the winner so far? Or maybe "fake-news"?

    Brexit?- post-truth.
    Trump?- post-truth.
    "Make America Great Again"- post-truth
"I never said that" (despite unedited video/audio recordings of same)- post-truth.

Also, some of the other quite good suggestions... (truthiness, click-bait, learnings) are good words to make fun of and try to expunge their applicability, and therefore usage from the lexicon... but they are older than 2016 I think?

  • Lilith __,

Slightly OT, but do we have a name for the sequence of disasters of November 14th? I’ve heard the M7.8 described as the Hanmer EQ, Cheviot EQ, Culverden EQ, Kaikoura EQ, also that the epicentre was closest to Ward…

I believe Hastings has lingering resentment that the 1931 Hawkes Bay EQ is known as the Napier EQ, although it was closer to Hastings, and the damage was worse there.

    Hamilton?

But only as a verb, surely.

I See what you did there ;)

Hastings was avenged when the Napier hospital came down.

Hamilton (the man) underpins the push for the electoral college to disavow Trump. Plus the musical about him which delivered a public rebuke cast as an appeal to the NoTrump.

    Populism.

Not very catchy, I know, but it encapsulates a lot about what's been happening politically this year.

A big shout-out to Checkpoint, for being there to fact-check and hold the powerful to account. A bright light in this dark year.
